I'm looking to have some 1/2oz jig heads (twitch twitch) made and need to know a good heavy wire jig hook to have them made with, any suggestions? I wish the heavy wire sickle hooks were still around...
If you have a hook model number that would be great.

Thanks!

Be careful what you buy online- make sure the weight/size of the head is correct for the hooksize. I purchased some 1/16 oz jig heads that had oversized hooks.

Try the VMC "Barbarian" jig hook in 3/0 for twitch jigs. It is available online at Captain Hooks. You have to pour them. They are a chemically sharpened sickle hook that is not "heavy wire" but it's not light either. You can bend them out with 15lb ultragreen on a rock but not on a fish, if that makes sense. They are fairly cheap too. These hooks don't give many fish back, even when made barbless.

heavy wire sickles are still around. GetMDry guide service. He just bought 8,000 and I picked a 1,000 up from him. Look him up. im sure he will sell you some.....at a price smile making our own jigs has been a huge advantage to staying ahead of the curve on the masses learning about twitching. you can only get them in huge orders...hence the 8,000.

on a side note im interested to why you would want them now? I only know of one river I am still slaying coho in...and you aint there smile you better know your sh!t if your trying to twitch up steelies sir. if you've never done it I wouldn't frustrate yourself. Ive caught a fair amount of steelhead on twitching jigs...it aint easy.

Please dude. I've seen people twitching jigs all over the PNW for years. It didn't get blown up until the internet fishermen couldn't stop yappin about it.

as have I. but in the last two years its exploded. Not a lot of fisherman want to go out and spend 2-3$ a jig only to lose them like drift gear in the cowlitz, when they have only hooked a few fish doing it. Sportco just started carrying twitching jigs and other companies JUST started carrying them. Being able to make them cheap and in quantities has keep me ahead of the game. oct-dec I have lost over 200 jigs for 360lbs of Coho's for ME personally. 2-3$ a piece would add up quick. Granted my friends in the boat use mine. but still. Your average weekend warrior isn't going to blow 30$ a trip on GEAR alone PER trip on 'twitching' jigs. If your not losing a handful a day either you are DIALED in on EXACTLY where your jig is....or your not fishing right for cohos.

why don't you go easy "beezy" and bring up VALID info for the guy asking a question instead of the SAME OLE RHETORIC. "ive seen" " you'r a" " you've never" "please dude" old old old. You always talk so much about twitching but you don't do it. Your like a hooker talking about abstinence. So SSSSSTTTFFFFUUUUUUUUU all ready. Ive never seen such flak come from such an unreliable source. You have nothing NEW to say everytime.

Thanks for all the help, appreciate it. I know of several rivers where coho can still be had, in good shape too. I'm a person that likes to be prepared to the best of my ability and as much as possible like to prepare next years gear - this year. I've cobbled together my twitching jigs to this point and have had fair success, but would like to produce a more consistent and dependable lure - affordably.
Not sure I'll ever be twitching jigs for steelhead, not that I don't think it would be effective, just have other methods I prefer. I prefer other methods for catching coho too, but there is little denying how effective a twitched jig can be for coho at times.

I like to twitch jigs, and I tie my own, but I don't pour my own heads (one less carcinogenic habit seems like a good idea these days). I like the fast sink you get with a 1/2oz. head in big water, but I have yet to find a pre-poured 1/2oz. head that doesn't have a big, sloppy clump of lead on the hook shank. I like the action my jigs get when I wrap the marabou around the shank (the fish seem to prefer it, too), but wrapping over those big lumps seems to kill a lot of that action. The tight wraps I get on a clean shank let the marabou fibers "breathe" a lot better, in my experience.

Anybody know where to buy a 1/2-oz. jig head, on a good hook (any that doesn't break qualifies), that doesn't have a big lump of lead on the hook shank?

Try contacting this guy: http://www.ebay.com/usr/tjcrenshaw

I've been happy with my orders. He has good prices, and makes all sorts of jig heads with different hook types.

Just spoke with my guide friend. So matzuo changed the tempering process of their hooks and sized down there "1/0". We just ran out of hooks this year and compared to the old hook the new one looks small and weak. They are NOT produced in china anymore. He spoke with the guy who designs the hook. After he got his 8k hook sin he was like "WTF" as he compared them. The design guy says that the hook is 3 times stronger than the previous model. I poured them and used them. definitely a superior hook.

as far as size. honestly unless your fishing for kings. a 2/0 is as big as you wanna go. I actually pour the same hook on my twitching jigs as my steelhead jigs and I see no difference in my hook up/ lost ratio in the last three months nor in my steelhead lost/hooked ratio. Unless your continually fishing low clear water for steelies.

it just sucks having 2 or 3 different size hooks for different things. Maybe im just lazy..yeah...im lazy. But it works.

is the same size hook as .... this....anddddddd this... and this

ALLLLLLLL the same size hook.

Matzuo sickles are gnarley. best hooks in my opinion.

Yeah I dont know why the whole jig twitching thing has taken off so much the last couple years, Merg, do you know?
By the way, I retrieved a bunch of your jigs out of various trees and wood, I like slightly bigger hooks than you do, but hey whatever works for you.

Eagle Claw 635. Works for me.

Fleaflicker,
As for removing the lead on the hook shank, just get some small sidecutting pliers.
http://www.amazon.com/Amico-Cutter-Diagonal-Cutting-Pliers/dp/B0087ZS6LA

Cut through the lead next to the head, but not into the hook shank. Then cut along the shank to remove the lead "worm barb". Wear gloves.

I just tie around the barb. on the smaller jigs it doesn't affect tying and on the larger (3/4 ounce) i just wrap around it and you never see it.
