Can't say I didn't see this coming, wonder what the NCAA thinks about this.

Universities are making billions off the efforts of these student athletes, wanting a piece of the action only seems fair.
WTF do you think is happening in the SEC?

Well it seems to be for medical...for now?

That's not too bad and something that should be done anyway, but Unionizing is a slippery slope. Tomorrow could be payment for games which I do not want. Keep it pure.

I agree that they should benefit from the revenue they create... But isn't that why they get a full ride to a college or university? That's worth as much as $50K per year, depending on the school. Not too shabby for someone with only a H.S. education....

The problem with paying players is that the money used to pay them won't come from existing revenues, but from new ones. Who pays the bill? Non-scholarship students, that's who. The cost of college is already WAY out of hand....

I get that they are only asking for benefits (so far), but I'd be willing to wager health care is not an issue for players who get injured. If the school doesn't pay the costs, the booster clubs most likely do. Seems to me the benefits bit would only serve to set the ball in motion toward salaried players in the not-so-distant future.

If they need to be paid, those interested in getting an education should pay for it out of their salary. I'd rather see them paid by scholarship, as they are today. At least under that model, some percentage of the 99.9% of college players that don't make the NFL have a chance to have a career and be productive members of society.

"These rules prohibit student athletes from selling autographs, likenesses of themselves or being reimbursed for public appearances."

This is the part that needs to change...either ban the universities and NCAA from doing this, or allow the kids to do it, too.

Fish on...

Why don't we just end the charade. If the NFL and NBA want minor leagues then form them. Leave colleges, and college athletics, to actual students. That way, some hotshot high school kid could spend a year or two in the minors, get paid, and then move up. No need to worry about declaring for the draft. No need to be a fake student, clogging up classes.

Would also allow a pro team to have a larger reserve of players, ready to move up if injury strikes.
