I know of one lake in eastern Washington that holds browns, bows and tiger trout that I've seen fish go crazy over adult damsels. It is pretty special when it happens on the day you are there.


I also know of another lake in western Washington that holds cutts, bows and cuttbows. It has a prolific hatch of red dragonflies in the early fall. Lots of times they'll knock the natural out of the air or will totally miss it. The fish will come back looking for the bug on the water. Cover the rise with a cast and hold on. The takes are spectacular.
Now if it was only in New Zealand......

I love this. I've been lucky enough to have still water fished over a few, full bloom Damsel fly hatches in CO. Nice 16 - 26" Colorado Greenbacks by the dozens. It's pretty epic when it goes off like that...

Incredible! I've never witnessed anything quite like that. There's no shortage of damsels around here, but I rarely see fish eating the adults. The nymphs, on the other hand....

That was awesome. The slow motion predator from the deep perspective definitely gets me excited.

Got to see something similar during a cicada explosion in the same area (Otago) a few years back. Never did get a big down to eat my artificial though.






These things were massive, easily an inch and a half or two long not measuring the wings. I can't imagine even a large fish packing more than a couple in, but then again they've been found with 12+ mice in their stomachs down there.

That truly is as good as it gets.
