There is a Remington 770 that will be on sale for Father's Day, I think it will be $280 with what looks like a crappy scope. Buy it and put better optics on it?

I'd pass. An older Remington, sure. A newer Remington, no.

Here is a better package deal. Savage 11/110 combo
Reasonable glass as well. Hopefully it goes on sale.

Another one is here. Ruger American.
Also reasonable glass.

Pass on the Rem 770, stay with a 700.
Take a look at the savage, nice trigger.
I really like my ruger hawkeye but
I have a friend who shots new ruger american , problem is fit and finish is ok at best, stock makes contact with barrel. Gun is not accurate ,could be gun could be scope......he'll it could be him lol.
For what your budget is, I'd still go quality used rifle over entry level gun.
Unless you plan on upgrading down the road.

A 30-06 is an excellent choice. I shoot a 165 grain Trophy Bonded out of my Tikka for both deer and elk. 1 shot kills and no tracking required. As far as optics Nikon makes some great scopes that wont break the bank. I like the 4-12x40 BDC.

Thanks again everyone. I am combing the used market to a get a better used rifle than a cheaper new one.

This is fun.

Savage rifles are nice. The '06 will kill whatever you want to kill with it. It sounds cliché, but my grandfather killed dozens of elk with his and Nosler partitions. If I were in your shoes, I'd get a Savage and pick one well-constructed bullet (partition, accubond, etc.) and shoot all big game with the same load. There really is no reason to make it any more complicated than that (except to buy more guns, which isn't a bad reason).

I got a Ruger M77 7MM Remington Magnum in excellent shape with a Simmons 3.5 x 10 scope i'll sell for 400.00. I bought it for a friend of mine 3 months ago from a friend, and he hasn't came up with the money ( he told me two weeks), so it's up for grabs it someone wants it. The gun has a walnut stock. I think I could get 600.00 if I really wanted to market it. PM me if anyone is interested.
