Seeing the numbers, given the history - curious why it opened.

Spent the last week on the river. King fishing was almost OK. with the low numbers and C&R restrictions, most everybody was switching over to reds.
Hopefully the restrictions will help, but I'm afraid it's too little too late.

Or, as has happened the past couple years, the late run Chinook show up in August. After the fishery closes on July 31.

The fish are smarter than we are.....

Humor aside, there is the distinct possibility that these fish are changing to a slightly later arrival time due to differential exploitation by the recreational fishery. In other words, those adult that enter the Kenai River after July 31 may have a much higher chance of spawning successfully. So, if run-timing is genetically heritable (which it is), this possibility becomes more than just speculation. It's far from being a fact, but it should not be ruled out either.

Maybe that's why all our Puget Sound fish are still out in the ocean, Waiting for the August 15 closure.

That is also probably why there are coho, sometimes in the hundreds, going up PS streams in January and February.

Kind of a simple concept, biologically speaking. What survives to spawn does the spawning. Fish them hard and few survive. Water temps too warm, few survive.
