Hi Everyone,
I know fishing situations are rotten right now, but was just wondering about any area opened up right now for salmon. I have this good friend up here visiting with me that wants to go salmon fishing bad he is a fulltimer RVer and from this area (Bremerton)
He is driving me nuts about going salmon fishing anywhere. Would appreciate any input I can get. I haven't done any salmon fishing for years so I'm not much upon the latest scoop, other then almost all areas are I guess closed.

desperate,
Thanks
Fred

Times are tough for salmon right now. The only area I know of that's open is the Sound, south of the Narrows Bridge. I don't know much about that area, except for the southeast tip of Anderson Island, I believe it's called Lyle Point. To the west of there is Devil's Head. Those two places can produce fish, either deep trolling or mooching.

If you can wait until June 1, everything south of the north end of Vashon Island opens up, except Commencement Bay. I've always thought this was much better fishing. Fish Point Defiance on the outgoing tide. Fish Point Dalco on the incoming tide. 2 hours on either side of tide change is best, combined with early, early morning is even better.

The current at Point Defiance alway runs to the west. Start at Owens Beach and drift or troll toward the Point. I always like to start out mooching. Start at Owens Beach in about 120 feet and drift west to about Crab Point or so, farther if you like. Try successive drifts a little deeper each time. Remember that the dogfish show up some time in June, but it's a little early for the worst of them right now.

If you troll, use downriggers. Watch out for the moochers. If you stay down at Owens to the Point, stay outside them. A better trolling pattern is from Owens Beach to the Slag Pile and return. Start in 120 feet, troll as slow as you can. Run your downrigger ball all the way to the bottom and stop, your speed will get the ball up off the bottom into just about the right depth. The bottom here is good, I've never lost a cannon ball here. Use your depth finder and track the 120 line up to the boathouse. If no luck, return on the 130 line and keep going out to about 180.

I have had good luck with the green flasher and a green spackle back hoochie. If you have two downriggers, try one full sized hoochie and one mini-hoochie on a smaller flasher.

Sometimes, the bigger fish will be transitional fish and they may run at about 40 feet, rather than staying on the bottom. So pay attention to the bottom 30 feet and the top 40-50 feet.

At Dalco, start at the ferry dock and drift or troll toward the point. The drift on the incoming tide will take you in that direction. I like to mooch this area rather than troll. As you get more toward the Point, the bottom drops pretty quick. It's easier to stay in touch with the bottom mooching.

Hope this helps some. Good luck!
