I'm looking to purchase a rod/reel combo for saltwater salmon fishing and hoping to get some advice on good multi-purpose options.

Now, I know that different rods will perform better for different situations, but I'm hoping to get a setup that will work OK for a few different applications without breaking the bank.

My plan is to use this rod/reel setup to do some jigging and troll some herring (no downriggers) relatively close to shore in my pontoon boat. It would also be nice if the setup could be used to cast buzz bombs from the beach.

Any suggestions on some sort of setup that would do all three halfway decently?

My old Fenwick 85C works well as described. Pair it up with a 5500C3 or a Bantam 50 and you are good to go.

I think you'll have little trouble finding a rod that works for light trolling duty and for casting duty...fairly long and limber does well for both.

Jigging rods are typically shorter and stiffer, and while you can use longer and more limber rods to do it you will work twice as hard and be half as effective if you use one.

Fish on...

I'm currently using my Okuma SST-C-862M and AbuGarcia Revo for all these purposes. This works fine for beach casting, but I'd rather have something shorter for the pontoon (especially for jigging, but for trolling as well).

Check the Astoria area Craigslist; I hear there's gonna be a bunch of quality rod/reel combos listed soon. smirk
