Im writing a blog post about catching more fish. The first 4 out of 5 points are about the internet.

Got me thinking though....i dont use it much anymore. Once everything is dialed in you just consult your journal, river flows, and dates.

But to the up and coming fisherman its essential. How many of you still do google searches on techniques, reports, river flows, and such? Or do you just get up and go to the river you always went to ?

im trying to figure out how savvy the average fisherman is on the internet and whether i should offer more detailed info on sites or if the average guy is googling it and making it happen.

Google maps to scout launches and locations. Believe it or not, WDFW's website has a lot of information about river launches. NOAA charts for the Columbia and Snake for scouting. Blogs or cameras sometimes if I question clarity. River gages depending on the river.

Now if I could figure out how to mount downriggers on my drift boat so I could properly run superbaits, I'd be set.

Not me!
I always just go on Facebook and ask for a handout, blowing up every little trickle this state and fellow anglers try to keep secret rofl

blogs and the like are a double edged dagger as you already know..i see that you write more about technique and how to find your own secret spot and I applaud you not giving many hand outs..

On a side note..i saw this idiot down on the skok the other day and checked out his website that has membership complete with text alerts to "when the salmon are in" . The dude was a total tool and as I suspected his site solidified my assumption..gives up way too.many secret waters with no disregard and usually seems to promote flossing as the number one technique.

Lunkersguide.com is his joke of a site...don't be like him merg wink

This.

I check the weather, sometimes.

I check the tides if I think it matters for that day in the salt.

I check river levels if it has rained much.

Otherwise I just go fishing whenever/wherever and adjust my technique either to the conditions, or to whatever I feel like fishing with that day, conditions be damned.

Fish on...

Merg,

I'll echo what a few others have said. I use the internet for tides, weather, river levels, and such when I feel the need to. Not as much for technique. Though I feel pretty comfortable employing many techniques, I do get online and do some research before I hit a new body of water for the first time. Each river (or lake, bay, etc.) has it's own nuances. Some of those can be learned through other's reports, but many have to be learned first hand.

I use it for all of the above mentioned items, but also for technical support and gear purchasing. New species and methods for targeting the same; refreshers on my knot tying; how to tie certain fly patterns (or prep materials); gear reviews and buying; how to do this and that...

What I don't use it for is getting accurate fishing reports or hot spots.

Learned about pink worms and twitching from here. The other day I was trying to get my cure. I remembered a hint I got a while back and by searching the internet I was able to pin point what my eggs may be missing. I still need to find one ingredient that I can't find locally, so I will need to find a site that sells it.

Then, dam counts. Tides, google earth to run a river and look for hidden bends or holes. Planting numbers.

If I am planning on fishing a new river that is not local, I will sometimes look at posts from previous years to see when the peak appear to be happening. I still think about running down to the Gray to look for stray springers.

When I fish the Straits the only thing I look for is wind forecasts, and current tables in the area I am fishing. If I cant find currents then I settle for tide tables. The one thing I learned quickly in the straits, is low/high tide do not always coincide with current direction. Knowing which way the currents will be flowing helps me to save time in deciding where I am going to start fishing, when and what direction.

I hope to see photo essays and stories from a few people here about places I wish to visit or am unlikely to go. Not many of those anymore.

And tides, weather or currents is about it.

I check the internet to read what I've posted about fishing, and then I go fish there taking full advantage of that information. This way I don't have to waste valuable brain cells remembering how, when, and where to fish. Easy peasy.

I use the internet all the time to go fish.

If it wasn't for remote access to e-mails I would spend a lot less mornings on the river.

I never use it for anything else other than levels if it rained a lot.

I check the river levels and weather reports and tides almost daily. Like to check out maps and aerial photos too occasionally. Also check for reg updates, etc. I'll check reports every so often. Used the internet to report my PS crab catch. Also used the internet to get an out of state license. The internet is a wonderful tool. Also have used the internet to get charters and guides. Will be fishing in Hawaii in a couple of months for two weeks. Time to do a little research. Did a little fishing this weekend without the help of the internet. It depends.

One of the rivers I fish every fall is quite a drive and I do check a couple guide websites to see how they are doing in the lower river. It gives me an idea of run timing. Other than that I check river levels and tides, weather etc. Conditions are always changing. Gotta put in the time.

I frankly use it for everything. For those of us who are not dedicated or as die hard as others it is helpful and entertaining to see what others have to say. It also builds confidence in a sport that quite frankly needs more support. I have used the net and this blog to find folks to fish with or seek advice on how to buy a boat. This is the age of communication and technology. Out with the old and in with the new I say.

Hey Nathan, This is J. W. Snyder the Owner and Founder of The Lunker's Guide

Everyone is entitled to their opinion I can respect that but I personally don't care if you like the site or not. I understand that you fear the growing success of The Lunker's Guide will mean you'll end up having more competition at some of your favorite fishing holes.

What I find interesting is that you preach integrity, yet you are spreading blatant falsehoods in an attempt to smear my business. We spoke for a total of five minutes on the Skok, where by the way, I had a camera in my hand not a fishing pole. Yet you have decided to make personal attacks on myself and my site. Claiming I promote flossing.

In no way have I ever endorsed and promoted ANY! illegal fishing activity. As a matter of fact when we met, you were the only one talking about Snaggers and Flossing. I specifically told you I DO NOT! promote anything illegal, personally or on my site.

Thankfully people who read your post and have actually went to my site were able to see your claims are baseless and that you're simply trying to pump out misinformation in an attempt to prevent others from hitting your sacred fishing holes, unless of course they are part of your "Good Ol Boy" club.

I must admit that at first I was offended by your insults and false accusations but in the end Nathan I have to say "Thank You!" Ironically since you started making posts on the fishing boards with you little smear campaign, membership to The Lunker's Guide has tripled. Crazy as it seems, I owe is all too you.

Hahaha..ya ill reserve the right to give you my retort to your schpleal when I see ya in person next, for now you could just put work into an actual site for fishing rather than the lame cut and paste you have for most of the rivers you "detail"
What to use: corkie and yarn shouldn't really be talked about with the pious attitude you spoke with on the river and on your page and rant here. And I never said you were fishing, just said you were a jokster scoping out the skok, with a bum fishing site....so get your facts straight (on multiple things) and piss off buddy.

Nice attempt on the plug for your site, try washingtonfakes.com you might drum up some business with those rodjockeys

I just went to "Lunker" whatever.com and had a laugh or two. For $5.99 a month you get a map and equally generic instructions on Washington State Lunker holes. I thought lunker was an exclamatory southern bass term? rolleyes

Here is an excerpt from the Humptulips page.

Preferred Tackle:
One single point barbless hook. Corky and yarn, Jigs or spinners,

Bait:
Sand shrimp and Salmon Eggs.

Stink:
Sand shrimp and Salmon Eggs.

Tackle Tips:
Top Recommendation for this location is plunking or drifting sand shrimp or eggs. next possibly a stealhead jig, or corky and yarn and lastly spinners.

Combat Fishing Rating:
Hand to Hand. Eye protection recommended!

Humptulips River Fishing Access:
Lunker Location Fishing maps are only available to Lunkersguide.com members. Sign up today and get access to all of our Salmon and Steelhead fishing location maps and to our free Lunker Alerts SMS/Text message fishing Alerts system which covers over 37 rivers in Washington. With a Lunker’s guide membership you’ll be well on your way to catching more lunkers!

It is discouraging that so many try to whore out the resource for personal gain.

Yea and the dudes card had a picture of a bass of it too! Truly funny stuff right? I can imagine the type that pay for the service.....
Just to nit pick, the dummy also misspelled steelhead on that river and I saw several other funny typos. ..spell check that word "anise" next time cause your auto correct thinks you mean something different. ..or delete your typing history

In the legend of King Arthur, the Fisher King was a renowned angler whose errant ways caused him to be struck dumb in the presence of the sacred chalice. I am no great fisherman, and a steelhead is not the covenant of Christ, but with each of these fish I am rendered speechless.

What I don't use it for is getting accurate fishing reports or hot spots.

Well said. People aren't being forthcoming if they say they've only used the internet for entertainment with respect to fishing.
