The newest major entries to the Tacoma retail scene — a large sporting-goods emporium and a national crafts retailer — have announced their opening dates.

Tacoma’s two major and long-awaited fall premieres will both feature giveaways, snacks and opening-day bargains.

• Hobby Lobby, at the site of the former Top Food at 3130 S. 23rd St., will welcome its first customers Friday with a soft opening. The grand opening will be celebrated Sept. 22, according to store manager Ryan Fairchild.

The Tacoma store will be the company’s sixth in Western Washington.

• Look for giveaways including gift cards, tackle boxes, mugs and keychains when Bass Pro Shops opens its first Washington location Oct. 23.

The opening will be preceded by an “Evening of Conservation” featuring representatives from conservation groups including Ducks Unlimited, Quails Forever and the National Wild Turkey Federation.

John L. Morris, owner of the privately held enterprise, will be present at the Thursday opening — as will several sports and outdoor TV celebrities, according to a company spokeswoman.

Known as a destination retail store, Bass Pro Shops on Hosmer Street will feature a 16-lane bowling alley and an Uncle Buck’s Fish Bowl and Grill cafe.

Did I read that right? A 16-lane bowling alley in an outdoor store? Whoever thought of that is either crazy or a genius......

Okay, another national firm comes to town. Yawn. I for one will try to continue to spend my dollars with the local firms which have supported outdoor sports folks (is that the politically correct term?) for years. If Bass Pro Shop has local people as store managers and those people stay up on issues and take the time to go to Commission meetings and testify under the Bass Pro Shop banner then I will adjust my perspective.

Another large outdoor emporium (like the one down the road) that will run out of the mundane important stuff at the wrong time, such as 2/0, 3/0, 4/0 and 5/0 Gamu octopuss hooks during the height of ocean salmon season. There will be plenty of Walleye hooks and $14.99 fish flashes, however.

Actually, having a brick and mortar store nearby is convenient for returns, just be sure they don't try to keep the S & H fee on an order that they screwed up on.

Just like Cabela's. I'm not sure they even do much research as to what we are all about out here. But hey if you like aquariums with rainbow trout that look like they went to triploid camp (chewed up fins and soars all over them) these are the places for you. Don't take your kids though we don't want them to think that's what a real rainbow looks like!
