Thinking about getting one of these for camping, steelhead camp. Has anyone used this brand of tent they look good and a good price for the quality of craftsmanship.

http://www.walltentshop.com/spiketents.html

And the stoves look good to check them out.

Any input on wall tents helps

Have used a Rainier wall tent and frame for about 2-decades. Rainier is local. They can be set up by one guy if you know a few tricks. 5-foot wall trumps a 4-footer. The flue opening in the wall is far better than the the tents with a roof opening. Not very cheery to have rain or melting snow streaming onto your stove. That way, you can also tarp the roof to add a bit of insulation and to keep the snow from freezing to the roof when you're at 9,500 feet in Wyoming....

Linky

Have used a Simms Sportsman folding wood stove for 3-decades. They require an inch or two of soil in the bottom of the firebox to keep them from having a short lifespan. Very happy with it.

Linky

As Dave said, ain't much better....

Make sure you get a good stove from the start. It needs to be air-tight and large enough to hold a good amount of wood. If it isn't, you either freeze or get up multiple times in the night to add wood.

How do you guys have your floor setup. With no stitched in floor I would think a good old op down poor would swamp the inside? I see they make vinyl floor mats but not sealed around edges.
I know for safety you don't want the stove on top of floor mat unless it's fire retardent.

Thanks for input and I think a good wall tent would be the best for multi day winter steelhead trips and family outing with dog. This past summer with family and dog a tent was wet and cramped.

Bravo makes an awesome tent. . .
http://bravotents.com
He is out of Camas, makes it all himself, uses them himself as well, so he knows his chit .. .

I am in my second season in mine, has held up in Rain, snow, BIG F'n Wind, cold, etc. . . The stove that I got with the package is great, keeps a fire all night, heats the place up in below freezing. I got a 15'x21', it is big enough for 6 guys in elk camp.
Definitely stove out the side, not roof. For the fly/tarp get at least a 2' overhang for the sides and a 8' to 10' off the front for a "porch".

For the floor, I use the floor material that Bravo sells (rubberized tarp), works great. For the stove, I had a small (about a foot bigger than the stove foot print) sheet metal pan made up, so there is no worries about coals on the floor.

John is a good guy to work with, since he builds them himself, he can customize it however you want, you can get just the tent itself and then make the frame yourself and provide your own fly and floor, stakes, ropes, etc. . .
He is at the Puyallup Sportsmans show as well, usually has a show "special" too.

Check out Dogfish's FB page for pix, he is up there in it now, I will be back up in it in the am. . .. wish I was up there now. . .

I just finished 10 nights in Fish Ranger's tent. Excellent set-up. Airtight stove. Very comfortable in all types of weather, and we experienced it in the last week and a half.

John from Bravo is a shiet talker with small man's syndrome. He drove us away from his tents with the BS we experienced at the sportsman show years back.

We have 5 tents in our elk camp. A 16x20 and 12x16 from Rainier. A 16x20 and a 12x18 from Davis. The 5th tent is a made in Pakistan POS from Cabela's.

I just bought a 15x15 this past spring from Beckle tents down in E.Portland. Spent memorial day weekend building the frame for it. Had my cousin build my firebox. Used it twice since than and love it. it would make a real cool steelhead camp when the rivers are right. the flooring we put a grey tarp down than some of the indoor outdoor carpet from homecheapo than put the rubber back floor matts from Cintas or whatever down along your bed / cot. built the frame to have a 5' overhang for dry cooking and firewood storage on the porch. I have a 20x24 grey tarp that goes over the top of the whole tent that works great.Good luck,

SZ

PS, I'm into the set up about $1,500.00 is all.

I bought a15x18 Bravo three years ago on a recommendation and it is great. I looked at Montana Canvas, Rainier, Davis and in the end chose the Bravo. Glad I did. We always dig a trench around the whole tent and have just used a thick layer of straw for a floor ( not around the stove ). Cylinder Stove heats it up quick, but they burn out quick also. Like someone else said, gotta get up and reload it or you wake up to ashes.

Fish Ranger's tent. Sleeps 6 comfortably. I built shelves for it. Stove keep heat all night if you damper it down correctly. We lit it once and never had to relight in 11 days.

It has been a great tent (and a great camp thanks to the guys who participate).

The stove is awesome. Keeps a fire VERY well, heats the tent well in subfreezing conditions and the water tank on the side provides scalding hot water "on demand".

It really helps to have guys who are willing to invest a little time and effort to improve on the "basic" camp.

The winds we had up there the last couple of years put the tent to the test, it passed with flying colors . . . ..

One of my mantra's in the woods around here is never go to the shitter without a gun. A handful of times now I've had both bears and wolves pop out of the brush while my pants were down. They seem to know when you are most vulnerable.

Getting kilt while answering the call of nature would make for some awkward funeral talk, "at least he died doing what he loved" etc.

A .44 in a chest holster loaded for bear is a good thing to keep handy whatever you are up to in the bushes in AK.

Much smaller than what many folks are probably looking for in a bigger camp tent, but Alaska Tent and Tarp's Artic Oven line has a pretty loyal following up here.

They are bombproof, come in a variety of configurations, and come rigging for stove.

http://www.alaskatent.com/oven.html

They make more traditional style wall tents as well.

http://alaskatent.com/walltents.html

I've used the 12' Arctika and the 10' Artic Oven and both have been awesome.

A friend of mine that was raised in Alaska and had a favorite downed tree that was just the right height for his morning constitutional. Well one morning he was sitting on the log contemplating the meaning of life when his dog came up from behind and laid a great big lick in the money spot. He said he had to go back and get his shoes later.

The Sh!tter is exactly how two of my buddies got their deer this year. Our crapper doesn't have a door and overlooks a pond. He made it about 5 minutes out of camp on his ATV when the oh oh moment came so he turned around. While taking a seat he sees a couple of bucks work their way past the pond and down a little draw. So he finishes up and shoots the bigger of the two bucks. The second deer was a spike who beds down next to his dead buddy. Gets his FIL on the radio who an hour or so later shoots the spike.

Better to be lucky than good!

Only problem with that story is that he finished, then shot .. . .anybody knows that you take the shot, deal with business after. . . ..
Which is why I built the shitter with the windows/murder holes at the height a shouldered rifle would be from the seated position. . . and the front faces the area that has the 100+ yard view. . .. .

He left his rifle on the ATV. He's got the memo now.

There is a waypoint on my gps, Hide 1.2. Don't go there unless you want to find a few piles of crap. Normally a 1 crap a day guy, but elk camp was different. I bet there are at least 6 piles at that waypoint.
