The guy who runs The Fish Sniffer, one of Nor. California's most popular hunting/fishing sites posted an article about his D zone deer hunt. In it he mentions that he filled his tag by taking a 200 yard butt shot.

D-Zone Bucks! Written By: Cal Kellogg, September 22, 2014

"The buck was about level with me and facing straight away about 200 yards away. It wasn’t an ideal shot, but it was the only shot I was going to get.

I put the crosshairs on the base of his tail, the rifle went off and buck went down as if pole axed. When I dressed the husky forked horn I found that the 7mm slug had traveled through the abdominal cavity beneath the spine shredding the left lung and major vessels leading to the heart. Despite my worst fears the bullet didn’t hit any major bones and very little meat was lost."

When questioned in the big game forum about the ethics of taking that shot he went on the justify it by saying he was using a 7mm Remington Magnum and he felt confident in making the shot. The poster and others called him on taking that shot under any circumstances and Kellogg responded by deleting the thread.

So what do you all think about taking a 200 butt shot on a blacktail and the guy who runs a fishing and hunting site bragging about it. This guy and his moderators also delete and ban posters (I know from personal experience) who question flossing, aka snagging salmon and steelhead. Personally I think it is reprehensible. They should be proponents of hunting and fishing ethically and are doing just the opposite.

I intentionally shot a deer moving away from me once.

Buddy had hit the deer poorly, his gun jammed (Remington 740), and he couldn't clear it. I was on the opposite side of the draw from him so I couldn't just hand him my rifle. Deer was limping away, and he said "shoot". I told him it wouldn't be pretty, he said "shoot".

.300 Win Mag, 150gr Barnes X. Deer went down solidly. Broke the left rear hip ball, nicked the spine, broke a few ribs and ended up in the far shoulder. Retained 147 grains. His hit was better than he thought and would have killed the deer, so he tagged it.

That would be one of only a few situations where I would think a Texas heart shot would be acceptable.

Personally, I wouldn't visit that site.

My very 1st shot on a big game animal went down like that.

Was in my early 20's & hunting NE Montana & I had a stack of B tags to fill & I was all fired-up to do the deed.
Had a group of mulie does were stotting away from us @ 150 yards, I tried to time a off-hand back of the headshot with my .270.

It went right in the sweet spot.

I ran to where she dropped & put a .357 hollowpoint thru her temple. Apologised to her & all her ancestors

Not my proudest moment, but I did learn, & never pulled that stunt again

Snaggers, and now butt shooters, eh?

That's not a bad idea right there...the not visiting part.

Fish on...

13 years old. Never had seen a legal deer while armed. Big doe jumps up in pretty heavy cover . All I can see for a target is her ass. I know the men at camp will tease me mercilessly if I give a dear a Texas heart shot, but it's my first shot at a deer. I aim for the biggest thing I can see and squeeze one off - 32 Winchester special octagon barrel - It falls in a heap and I am thrilled. I go take a look and the ass looks unblemished. Look up a bit farther ans see shes hit smack dab in the center of the back of her head. Damn! Better to be lucky than good. I never did tell the old guys at camp what really happened.

The first two deer a buddy got bowhunting were both butt-shot (ham-shot?). There are lots of blood vessels there and the bled out pretty quickly. Not that I would recommend it, more as a last resort on an already wounded animal. But (no pun intended) it can be pretty effective.
