I ran low on 2 stroke oil the other day so the alarm started sounding on my EFI Merc 200.

Limped back to launch with the kicker and added oil in the remote tank in the transom. Ran motor briefly and the resevoir under the cowling quickly went to normal levels.

The dang alarm is still going off so now I'm worried that it's not getting oil. I realize it could be a stuck float or faulty sensor.

Anyone run into this? Is this something I can run a check on myself?

Trying to avoid a month in the shop and a bunch of money if possible.

Hey Thanks Rev!

I must've had air in the line because after the first couple steps I'm good to go. Whew! I was thinking I was out of commission.

Whew, double whew........Problem, locally....is where to go to have motor worked on.

I used to carry 2 or 3 quarts of OB oil.....never had to use it but bailed 2 people out because they had the same problem you did.

Yep, I would've taken it up to 3 Rivers. That's a long haul so I'm glad it didn't come to that. Now have extra oil stored in the bow.

Man Bill, wish I would've ran into you the other day. Everyone I saw had 4 strokes.

glad you got it working.

I am going to add that on my 175HP the reservoir in the motor used to continually fail to fill. I could pop the cap and it would fill right away but then wouldn't re fill till I cracked the lid again. it took me a while but in the end I was able to track down one of the vacuum line ends had a clogged valve. it was a less than $2 part. on my boat the alarm is in the cuddy cabin. so when you are running from place to place and the door is closed you can't hear it. I was thankful that my kids were in the cabin and told me about the alarm. I now run with the door open.

I've been thinking of getting rid of the oil pump and just mixing gas myself. on the other hand, it's really nice to just gas and go.

Discussing odd problems and oiling systems I had a similar problem at WOT and ultimately tracked it down to the fine mesh screen in the oil reservoir being clogged with sludge such that it would not pass enough oil at high RPMs.

Duly noted, thanks.

At least I know the alarm is working so I don't burn up the motor if that happens.

Toms Outboards in Olympia takes the oil injection off all the motors he rebuilds. He has seen plenty of frozen up motors because the motors were not getting enough oil or the damn plastic gear that's turns the pump failed. When you mix your gas and oil yourself no problems.
