We currently have Verizon but we're thinking about switching to Sprint. We had T-Mobile and they were horrible. Any input?

I had Sprint for two years, in Olympia, and it was horrible. Couldn't wait to get back on Verizon, which works well pretty much everywhere including Alaska.

Verizon seems to have a edge most places in this state. Its good in Ak but ATT has coverage out on the Aleut chain were verizon does not. Thats going to change soon. From my experiance verizon is better on the OP. The only place in this state were ATT has been better is a few spots down on the Snake. Id stay with verizon over T-Mobile, and sprint for sure if you cant live w/o service. If you want to save a few bucks..change. The Mrs and I gave up the unlimited net service, and combined our plans. Its around 133.00 for 2 phones when it was double that with the unlimited service thru verizon. Hopefully verizon will have service this year on the Al chain, and I can dump my Alaska Wireless plan. Oh...Yakutat is another place were you will not have service. That should change this year too.

ATT or Verizon, Sprint has terrible coverage, especially in rural areas.

I worked for a medium size construction company here in the PNW that originally had Verizon and switched to Sprint in an attempt to save money. Changing out cell phones, hot spots, ect for that many people was a nightmare. Within 3 months, we were switching BACK to Verizon and taking a massive hit because of canceling our contract early and the upcharge associated with Verizons service, but additional costs were worth every penny. Sprint had the absolute worst cell service I've ever experienced. No service and/or dropped calls when I was managing onsite in South Lake Union? Are you kidding me? Verizon or nothing.

Verizon sucks, unless you actually want someone to get ahold of you while fishing/hiking in remote areas of the Cascades or Olympics...
Sounds like I should look into T-mobes , AT's and T or Sprunt for lack of getaholdofability.

So I'm guessing no one has found a good discount carrier that is piggy-backing on Verizon's network?

That's tough to swing when I mostly fish alone and am married with kids. It's more for checking in and letting her know I'm still alive.

Pageplus uses Verizon's towers and is a good deal depending on your needs. When my wife's contract was up with Verizon we ported her number to Pageplus and she now pays $12/mo. She has an iPhone 4s. The $12/mo plan is limited (250 min, 250 texts, 10mb data) but works for her. They have other plans that offer unlimited calling and texts with more data if you need it.

I am still on Verizon and our coverage is about the same when we are out together, works everywhere mine does. One odd thing is that in some more rural areas of the state (as in, the sticks) her phone goes to roaming where mine does not, she still has reception but can't make a call if she doesn't have a cash balance on her account (which is in addition to the monthly fee). Not a big deal, it costs a couple bucks extra per year to maintain a balance but odd that it doesn't work on the rural towers mine does.

Overall, thumbs up for Pageplus.

I was very happy with AT&T's service, but the coverage sucked once you left the highway.

The Verizon account I have now (family plan with four phones) is cheaper per phone, the coverage is far, far better...but the customer service seriously sucks balls.

Pick yer poison.

Fish on...

I don't have too many problems getting service out there. Seems the wife always get a text thru asking if I've drowned or not, I text back still swimming!!!

Yeah we will probably stay with them. I get highly annoyed by crappy customer service but I get to fish a lot more when the wife can periodically check my status.

This does not seem like a good fishing lifestyle. By periodically, does she check on your status more than once a day? Once a weekend?

I went camping and hiking with a couple friends last summer. When there was cell service, they'd call their significant others 8 or 9 times a day. I think that's f'd. I mean, how connected does one need or want to be? They knew we'd be home late Sunday afternoon or so.

Before cell phones I told my wife that if I didn't show up by Monday morning it would be a good idea to send someone looking. Nowadays with cell phones I have found it useful to call after I'm done fishing and reach the freeway. I give her my ETA so she can plan for dinner to be ready when I get home. Checking in during the day should be an emergency. Checking in multiple times/day is indicative of excessive neediness IMO. Counseling may be advised.

She texts two times a day. Around when I told her I'd make it to the river and when I told her I'd be off of the river.

My wife fishes so she knows how it goes. She retires after September so from then on I'm usually solo.

I second keeping ATT. Haven't had problem getting thru out in the OP and at my age of hiking to get to my spots out there, family worry about me.
