Believe it or not, I probably will be making the pilgrimage to Mecca this fall and chase a few of those "dawg" salmon around Robbo's stomping grounds. I would assume that my heavier chuck n duck gear (9 and 10 foot rods rated up to around 14 pound line) will handle these bad boys. Planned on fishing yarn, corkies, spinners, and rags. Any ideas on terminal tackle, yarn colors, line size, etc. that would help me out. Since I am a "Puppy Virgin" I may be way off base here, and have my cranium deeply lodged in a less than desireable place. Anyone want to help me pull it out with some info. Don't need any locations, as I can get that figured out on my own. Thanks a bunch.

Can't go wrong with GloBug yarn in Cherise, Moss or Chartruese. Also, the pea-sized corky in pink/purple scale or lemon-lime are 'ol standbys. I like to run the above with a #1 gammy, tied with 10 or 12lb maxima UG tipped with shrimp or sandshrimp.
But, dont forget the float rod. Last year's hot set up on the Skykomish was a red/white marabou jig with sandshrimp tail. Hot pink jigs work excellent as well as my fav hotgreen/chartruese. The latter is a tough one to find. But I so happen to have a lifetime supply of them specially tied with 2x hooks for them dawgs. Hawk, email me if you want to test a few while you're out here.

Everyone always talks about chartruese and purple for the dawgs. My Dad and I were fishin on the Nisqually throwin double chartruese with chartruese yarn and had picked up one in about 2 1/2 hours of fishin, I decided to try pink instead (same setup). Within five casts I had one on and we ended up hookin seven in the next 1 1/2 hours. So pink gets my vote. Tight lines, Jeff PS, they weren't lined.

Well color is not the most important, even tho most do seem to get hooked on chartses. To me the more important is to make sure you have a good leader, as these dawgs have some nasty teeth, more so if they are not real fresh out of the salt. Where i fish out in shelton, large hooks, small hooks, red flies, sometype of corkier mostly with green or red yarn, small small corkie and red hook and of course the largest spin-glo i ever saw, looked like a small sub with wings caught fish last year. bring what you got, go fish and have fun. That's the name of the game.

OK, now I'm fired up.
Any particular time in the fall when they are there in good numbers? I have a few friends out there that I met through this BB that will call me and let me know when to fly out. How big do these jagged jaw jig eatin, corky cracking, snaggle toothed spinner smashing, yarn yompers get? Average size? I'll make sure to bring plenty of alleve for my sore arms. Thanks

As I mostly fish the nisqually once the silvers and kings get out of the way I'd have to say any time after october ,a few of the northern rivers get fish earlier than that ,I'll have to check my log book for exact dates it seams to me that last years run was a tad bit late.As far as size goes I'd say the average is something like 8 to 14 lbs with quite afew in the high teens low 20's my personal record is 23lbs a bruiser I got on the Satsop.I beleive the state record was caught here also somethiung like high 20's low thirties I saw a pic of the fish ...what a PIG...These fish are SO strong you will need meds for arm cramps and backache if you get into the run during peak time I've had 20 fish days...hooked not landed ...bring bandaids I still have a nasty scar from a big buck I tried to c&r last season he ripped me deep so I took his maneater butt home and smoked his ass ummmm good drop me a line Hawk if you make it down this far....I'll bring the bandaids take care see ya in the fall ------------------ Row Quietly and fish a Cataraft }<<(('>-- --<'))>>{ Release all Wild Fish [This message has been edited by Osprey (edited 06-29-2000).]

Dang it, Hawk, you gotta get more accurate with the titles of your posts. When I saw "Dawg Gear" I thought you were going to share your thoughts as to how the Minnesota Mob rigs puppies when livebaiting for muskies.
Hey, if you want to armwrestle mean, tough ugly fish I highly recommend Giant Trevally's (Jack Crevalles x Arnold). But the real prize goes to Dogtooth Tuna (which I've never landed, said to say). Unfortunately, the plane flight to Midway or Christmas Islands is a couple hours beyond Hawaii but if you survive your fall chum trip we could do something insane in 2001.
Meanwhile, try to keep your posts less fishing-oriented as this discussion of technique and hard-fighting fish makes me want to hop on a plane go to Alaska and donate some more jaw jewelery to the resident kings.

Hawk, like i said before color is not the important thing. when the fish are in, they will strike or mouth about anything in front of them, or at least what slides thru their lips. like i said, i fish down by shelton on small creeks, kennedey and on the north side of town, you can almost pi** across both waters at low tide.
last year i saw good fish, a couple so bright, even after being out of the water for an hour did not have the typical marks showing. 5-14 pound's, and in shallow water a few up to 25 pounds. man what a hand full in less than 4 feet and 15 pounder is, kick you right in the fore arm, fast and bang can be gone in seconds. make sure you bring plenty of good leader material, like i said, them teeth will do everything a mad, hell bent fish can do to your terminal gear.
hope to see ya this fall.

Snagly you have a point there, my personal best trevally (lowly) and chinook are pretty close in weight, 58 and 65 respectively. But, I sure wouldn't want that trevally on the end off my king rod.
Also, (with due respect to the kings) I've only pup-tent my waders/shorts on two occasions while fishing:
1) When 30,000 dogs roll in unison five feet in front of you at Hoodsport.
2) You're reeling in as fast as you can and the water is "humped-up" behind your resin chugger by the jack pack in hot pursuit.

So now the big question Brudda Hoh. What do you prefer to catch, chinook or Ulua? I had a friend in the Navy that was from Hawaii and he wanted me to take orders there with him and we'd be able to fish and surf all the time. But I told him I heard the call of the Chinook, Coho and Steelhead too much and got out and moved home. So what do you think? Did I make a boo boo, or are our fish better up here.

The best dawg fishing I've had is the Satsop. Real fun. I use green/chartuese yarn and corkies. Also red/pink. Or a combo of each. Hoodsport is a combat fishery, but a kick. They also get kings in August I hear. As for Snagly's puppies for bait, it's kittens. I heard that those were great for use back in NY.

Howdy, I get stoked thinking about the Chums this Nov. They run every year, but the fish are way more abundant during the even years. I save some pink humpy spoons to fish the back-eddys on the Sky. A purple Beau Mac jig fished waist deep will score salmon and summer-runs. If you don't see fish(rolling or holding) move on until you do. If all else fails and fish are present, corkie/sandshrimp should do the trick. Night fishing(where legal) with glo corkies is an exciting way to spend the evening.

Don't forget the "wrapped Kwikfish", sizes 14-16. Who knows, in my area it could be a silver, chinook or a "dog"....but I agree with others....pound for pound a big male dog is one tough fish!!!!
Retired life is "such a bitch"....fish, fish, and then fish some more!!!!!
