Typically in most of our steelhead once they are in the rivers their digestive systems are essentially shut down. As a result virtually every item they ingest is identifiable.

However if you look at the picture showing the insides of this fish it is clear that it is a kelt (spawned out). Not to long after spawning the digestion process re-starts and the fish begins feeding and recovering from its spawning efforts. In this case the result is that the stomach contents are partially digested and difficult to identify. Though based on the color it seems logically that whatever it was it had been dyed. Dyed prawn/shrimp pieces sounds like a reasonable "guess"..

Hmmm - I don't know about that. They really look like offal parts and nothing there screams shrimp. Interestingly, look at the size of the knife in scale comparison. These things look pretty small and a bit smaller than any fowl livers or kidneys I've ever seen or fished with. Chicken "fries" perhaps? Regardless, this just re-confirms that a Steely will eat just about anything.

It was one hungry fish. Those are not shrimp, either olives or grapes. Seedless whatever they were. I threw about 6 others out before I took that pic. The fish was caught near a pretty popular park in the area. Some one musta been tossing them in and the fish liked um> ALOT! I've been busy so I'm curing her eggs today. Not a spawner about an 8 pound fish that was actually a really nice cutting Steelhead...for a winter fish. Wish I would have taken a pic with all of them.

The eggs were not fully mature for a fish her size. She for sure was not spawned or close to it, I'll send pics to 2many of the skeins from her before I cure them today, maybe he can post them. Not that it really matters. the fish was still eating weird chit.
