I've always bought Shimanos, but had a few issues with my last Curado.

I'm reluctant to buy something else, but time for a Revo SX? Or something else? I'm open to ideas - or just sticking with another Curado. I'm looking for value and durability at this point.

This would mostly be for throwing hardware.

Do you need a new reel or just another reel?

In my view, the older model Curado's are far superior than what they are currently selling. If you don't need a new reel, look for a Curado 201 (lefty) from either the late 1990's or early 2000's. Ebay has some, and there are used fishing tackle websites that have some. Price will depend on how hard it's been used.

But if you want a new reel, my experience is that it's hit-or-miss on quality. You can pay a high price, but it won't assure you of high quality. I've never owned a Revo, but I hear good things about them. Right now, I'm using a couple different Okuma level wind reels for tossing hardware, but I DO NOT recommend them. The parts wear out really fast, particularly the bearings and the worm gear.

the reels these days are basically all the same. wiffle ball easy cast spools. 25 bearings (sarcasm). what revo has going over the others is the stock smoothie style drag washers (not greased, dry). the common thread that makes all these reels equal, the clutch pawl that reingages the crank to the spool, FAILS. this small part is the Achilles's heel of almost every low pro reel.

I will say this though, I have NEVER had to replace this clutch pawl part in a daiwa low pro reel. just sayen...

Shimano Curado user for a long time......have 4 of the "old green" Curados that have been bullet proof, do have one of the newer "hi-speed" that I also like.

I do my own maintenance, and probably over do, but nothing makes for a bad day fishing than to have a reel go bad or break a rod.

Lot's of the old green ones, around!!!!

daiwa is leading the front on reels IMO

zillion, tatula, and lexa make up my arsenal now. havent looked back for a second!!!!

what a lot of people dont realize is that $150-200 doesnt get you as good of a reel as it used to. there are plenty of good reels in that range like the tatula, lexa, etc but by all means they can have their minor flaws.

i just recently stepped it up to the zillion tws and holy mother of god... !!! kneel

I'll second the motion on that Achilles heel thing.

Good to know about the Daiwa's

Thanks all. A couple other folks off board have also talked up the Daiwas. Might be time to try one.

I might give the Tatula a shot. $150. Would you go with the high speed 7.3:1?

I have a thought on the clutch pawl and preventing wear to it. I have changed my practice on engaging the spool with the crank. I put light pressure on the spool with my thumb and bring the spool back as I engage with the crank. I really think this practice has made my CPs last a long time. when the spool is slightly reversed the effort to engage is very light, extending the wear to the CP.

just a suggestion.

Have not worn out a B model (Curado) yet.
Got the 1st in '93....regular use since about '95 (had to get used to the green color)
Many teardowns (clean and lube).

Old school curados here. Tried a revo and looked at daiwa and just don't see a reason to change. Even tried brand new curado a few years back and sold it. A few bsf's and a jdm scorpion all with carbontex/boca upgrades and I'm set.
