LONGVIEW, Wash. (AP) - Federal wildlife officials have launched an investigation into the death of a sea lion in Longview after a necropsy revealed it had been shot in the head.

The Daily News of Longview reports that the Humane Society of the United States and the Humane Society Wildlife Land Trust are offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people responsible for shooting the sea lion, named Stillie by local animal control.

Stillie was stranded on a Cowlitz River sandbar near Gerhart Gardens Park in April. Stillie was unable to eat, drink or move and had a wounded eye and probable broken jaw.

Hurting a sea lion is punishable by penalties up to $100,000 and one year incarceration.

A buddy recently fishing below Castle Rock spotted 3 floaters in the same day. Sounds like somebody has caught the long range bug and doing well.

Actually, this is a very sad thing to see. Granted, the critters are overpopulated, and unfortunately they also like the same fish we do, but no animal should have to suffer like that one did. If you have to kill something, then kill it..man up and don't leave it there to die a miserable death.

For 95% of 'em, about all they could be convicted of is stealing a fish off our line, and while that's a real pisser (been there), we need to be creative enough to find a humane way to manage the problem.

If ya gotta shoot one, the forehead is not the place to shoot it. They use that forehead to bash through ice, and the skull is thick there. Back of the head or in the ear will get the job done. Just make sure it is 100% dead, and if not then shoot again. Since you've taken responsibility for that critters life, you can at least give it an honorable death.

The people that feel they will solve the problem by shooting one are not honorable.
They are the same type of people that last night did a lawn job in the nicest yard in the neighborhood.

The sea lion problem is not a scientific problem...everyone knows how to fix the problem.

It's a social problem, an optics problem...and dumbasses shooting one or ten only make the problem bigger and harder to deal with.

Fish on...

Surfing this morning I was surrounded by a troop of the big fat suckers. They wouldn't leave me alone, barking and carrying on. There had to be at least 10 in the group that was near me, water was clear enough to see them swim by. Massive beasts.

Not as much fun to look at when you are in the water with them. They pestered another guy so much that he went in.

Look at the bright side.

The sharks hopefully focus on them.

Rocket Red, do you ever see surf perch out there when surfing when the water is clear?

No, never seen a surf perch while surfing. I have seen them in the waves before when fishing.

I've seen a school of silvers off the north jetty a couple times when I was surfing.

Let's hope they are transient orca. They eat seals and other marine mammals. Which is exactly what we need in the Col Rv estuary.

But if it's a resident orca (e.g., J-Pod), they eat salmon. That would make the problem worse.....

However, since the waters from the Columbia River (the plume) extend many miles out into the ocean, and the plume carries lots of scent from sea lions, hopefully it's just a matter of time before the transient orcas make an appearance. They would certainly have plenty to eat. And the balance of nature would be restored......
