Holy F!

News flash: fishing is not good for fish. Ask any fish that has been caught. What might be less obvious is that "not fishing" won't necessarily provide the benefit of all fish populations surviving particularly well either. An alternative to Kurt and WFC's blanket approach would be to make situation specific regulatory decisions about fishing based on the most probable outcome that fishing, or not fishing, would cause.

A for instance, if fishing were always closed when water temp is greater than 65* F, then there would never in any summer be any fishing allowed in the lower Deschutes River, OR until some time in September. Locally the Stilly would be closed every summer. We could do a look-up and probably discover that a great many west coast rivers would be closed every summer because 65* F isn't that uncommon.

I totally agree with the concept of closing fishing by regulation when conditions make fishing unacceptably harmful to fish. But that isn't always 65* F. Everywhere. All the time. If the WFC wants to conserve all the fish all the time, then closing all fishing everywhere all the time would be one good way to get there. But we ought to keep both eyes open and understand whether the effects of our actions are the results we actually want.

Took a look at WFC's website today and their BOD? Dear Lord in Heaven...If they had it their way might be raised platforms over rivers with docents leading people to see the pretty fish> UGH!

I'm sure the WDFW will take their plea into consideration as a viable conservation measure. DFW and WFC have such a good relationship now what with all the legal litigation and whatnot....

I hope WDFW tells them to shove it.

just fish. A bunch of no good dirty hippies aren't going to tell me when and where I can fish. I doubt the WDFW are going to cooperate with these losers. They can't take legal action against them on a technicality with this issue.

I'm sure the tribes will sit out and let more fish enter the rivers to compensate for increased mortality. Ya right, not ever going to happen. This plays right into the tribes hands. WFC insists all those hatchery fish have to be removed before they enter the river. They'll net the crap out of every river. If the runs crash, they'll blame it on the warm water and we will again be forbidden from fishing.

I'm all for doing whats necessary to protect the fish but unless the tribes sit out as well, it's not going to benefit the fish one bit.

Seems weird that they left out the Snoqualmie. That river is super slow (warm) and has less then 300 wild returning summer run in the SF Tolt. It also has a small abundance of Wild Steelhead juveniles trying to survive the "trout" fisherman.

What the hell?

The same could be said for the green as well.

Surprised CCA didn't present their own plan to gently cool the fish in an ice filled recovery box before releasing them with a 35% mortality rate.

WFC seems to be feathering its financial nest with one lawsuit or threat on a consistently basis. Closing rivers that will have large pink salmon runs soon could reduce the financial improvement of more fishing licenses which will occur during pink runs.
