Word on the street is that Christie Brinkley is now dating Johnny Melloncrap. That women, while still extremely hot for her age, has just the worst taste in music. Bruce and Elton will probably be next. Not that she'll get very far with Elton, but she'll try anyway. Just stay away from Bowie you slut!

Sheesh! All the fag talk and accusations had me back in junior high there for a moment. Enough already! Take that crap out to the alley, like men, er fags, er what-the-hell-ever you are. I want to read what it is that you like or dislike about various musicians because I'm interested in learning more about music. Maybe the Darkside isn't such a good place for that. On the other hand, this is where some of my friends, who have opinions about music, hang out, so why not?

I'm with Dan S. regarding Billy Joel's Piano Man. If music is the combination of rhythm, melody, and harmony, then Piano Man is solid gold in more ways than one. Maybe it doesn't appeal to you, but that doesn't make it bad. It's only bad if you can substantively pick it apart within the framework of musical structure.

And what's with the Rolling Stones hate? Saying "the Stones are D-bags" is shallow and empty as criticism goes, making the criticizer the D-bag. How about something substantive? Otherwise your opinion is less useful than your asshole.

Several of you dislike the Eagles. I don't get it; I think they're really good. I know a former bass guitarist who doesn't like them either. But his criticism was that "they are too clean, too pure, too perfect . . ." He likes to jam on guitar, but that's not the purpose of every piece of music. I don't see why "clean" makes a piece "bad."

When I look back on the rock that I liked so much in my youth I realize that for the majority, the lyrics were really teeny bopper juvenile. But since the musicians were teens or 20-somethings, it amazes me that any of it includes some kind of intellectual message. And those tend to be the tunes that best stand the test of time.

OK then, get back to your usual Darkside fag festing . . .

Salmo - its just personal taste. Some people like some kinds of music and others like other kinds. Robert F seems to really love the hard stuff. Some on here don't like the hard stuff at all. Its just the way it is.

Personally, I really dislike truck commercial rock and that's my problem with John and Bruce. While their music may be structurally sound, how many songs do they have about "America"? It's like they know that as long as they sing about "America", they will have paycheck after paycheck after paycheck. It's not creative, its commercial crap meant to fill their wallets. I'd also put later Bob Seger into this category.

All that being said, what kinds of music are you wanting to learn about or are you interested in? There is some good modern stuff out there, but you have to look really hard these days to find quality and not commercialism. Give us a lead on your tastes and I bet the fellas here can turn you onto some good stuff.

An addendum...if you are really into any "country" band that wasn't formed before about 1983, then you aren't really into country music. Calling new country music "Country Music" is like Kanye calling hip hop "the new rock and roll".

Fish on...

First off Taste is subjective. Some people are only exposed to
What they hear on the radio others dig into various genres to explore different sounds . Mcdonalds is the largest restaurant company and Walmart is the biggest retailer just because they are popular it does not make it the best.

Just because someone is talented does not mean they are all good. Billy Joel is is talented but his song writing does not compare to Bernie Taupin and Elton . Listen to them side by side and Elton blows Bj away pun intended. Elton is an equal if not better piano player than BJ. Elton likes BJ they toured together.

The stones even in their early years copied the style of other acts. They are not innovative and they do not have the best position players. The Who on the other hand had one of the best at every position. Townsend is an abosulte genius. Moon is considered one of the top 3 rock drummers ever even with a time signature that was all over the place. Entwhistle is considered to be the gold standard of rock bassist. Daltry is a great front man not the best voice but that's not a requirement of front men . You can say the exact same thing about Zepplin. Sure the stones have some great songs but the majority are average.

It's interesting that people get bent because someone does not like their taste in music. But the stones still blow and their fans are pedestrian. Most of them live in planned neighborhoods with catchy names like chestnut hills .

Nick, good comments, and giving it a thought, I agree. Yeah, I know it's about personal taste, but it's interesting to know what's influencing that taste.

Jerry Garcia, me neither.

Stam, you were making complete sense to me right up until your desert island list. I never woulda' guessed, except maybe Willie Nelson. Maybe our age difference explains part of it, but Nirvana is more my kids' era than yours.

Todd, if Kanye called hip hop the new rock and roll, then he's one positively moronic f'er.

Salmo - don't give up on the "newer" stuff (relatively speaking). Most of the music I listen to is from the 60's and 70's which is my parents generation, but I still try to keep up with the times. At 40, I'm exactly from the "grunge" and "old school" rap generation. I have eclectic music tastes and am known to play an old country song, then Motown, then psychedelic rock, then wrap up with some metal or rap or 80's hairbands or 80's Brit. My friends hate it when I get control of the stereo because they want to listen to one kind of music and I want to listen to it all.

Good music transcends space and time both forwards and backwards.

This one may not be for everyone, but I love it. A perfect blend of multiple generations. My favorite band of all time is Floyd and I love fuzzy down tuned psychedelic rock, so hearing the younger kids embrace it gives me hope for the future. What was once old can be new again I guess...

Tame Impala - Elephant

And no, that's not John Lennon. thumbs

There is no "hick-hop" in Hell, only rap and polka music simultaneously played at full volume, 24/7. No earplugs allowed.

Nope she's more your speed , with all the posts and pictures screaming look at how neat I am, exclusive parties with the minions scrambling to get invited. She affected a British accent when married to G Ritchie much like you affected big sticks style were you two were dating.

This. The Who had it all.

But I always thought Daltry was a great rock singer, before he got too old. In fact, I consider the "Roger Bros" the best rock singers. Roger Daltry and Paul Rodgers. Too bad Paul Rodgers rarely if ever got a good song to sing.

Speaking of great singers, don't forget the ladies--Aretha and Linda R. [/quote]

We will find out in two weeks when they come to the key. I watched a concert vid from last year and they still sound good.

Wow...great thread so far. Pretty solid music, and great insults even if they were alcohol fueled.

Music is only as good as the occasion; if I'm getting ready to fight or fish Reiter ponds(or both); rock, metal.... going to work; country, classic rock, etc....

Today it was Tool, Counting Crows, Shine Down, and Clint Black.....lol

That says more about you Stam than it does me. It's only real to you.

Back on topic . The beastie boys are noise . Monkeys in the forest sound better and have more talent.
