Does anone know of a company that sells good quality unpainted jigs in a variety of hook sizes?
Every jig I have is made on cheap hooks that a smolt could bend!
I have heard of various people pouring their own on gammy hooks, does anyone sell them that way?

Steelhead Addict,
From my experience with Gamakatsu, I used to use Gamakatsu jig hooks but I got 2 or 3 complaints and I was forced to switch. I now run Mustad heavy duty hooks, these hooks are by far the strongest and they are as sharp as the Gamies! I went out with a 8'6" rod loaded with 20lb Maxima and went on a float and brought this rod along for $hit's and giggles. I put on a bare jig hook 1/8oz and casted it into log jam after log jam and snagged them on purpose and reefed on them. I could pull the boat over to the snag before the hooks would bend. I never did end up breaking or bending any hooks, but I am sure like anything some time or another anything can happen. I sell just the plain moulded jig hooks or tied ones. Email me and I will let you in on some prices. If you have a question about quality ask around here and they will be dead honest with you, good and bad...

Thanks,
Andy Matthews

I've bought dressed jigs from Andy and the hooks are plenty tough. Jigs are good, too. I've also purchased both dressed and plain jigheads from Mike Floyd of Rainbow Jigs (rainbowjigs@AOL.com)and his are very good as well. Both recommended.

If you get the Bass Pro saltwater catalog (Offshore Anglers), they sell jigs (dressed and plain) that hold up to salmon and steelhead. Check out p. 76 of the 2000 catalog "Roundhead" (10 pcs/ $2.50) and "Flathead" jigs in 1/8 to 1/2 oz sizes. These sharpen well and while they will bend some in a big fish, I've never had one straighten out. Perhaphs the best is the Kalin "Ultimate Jig Head" features chemically sharpened, strong hooks. It's much more expensive at 3 pcs/ $3.50 but, hey, what are you gonna spend your money on, right?

Other than those three places, I can't think of many -- if any -- steelhead jigs where I don't bend the hooks and/ or needlessly lose fish in fresh and/ or salt. Sad.

Get ahold of Rainbow Jigs, they specialize in Steelhead Jigs and sell heads with heavy wire hooks in 4 sizes-1/16th, 1/8th, 1/4 and 3/8th. You can e-mail them at rainbowjigs@aol.com and they can get an order form out to you.

Cabelas, sells unpainted jigs on gammy hooks. Try out your flex-hooks yet?

Got my 1/16th ounce heavy wires form Rainbow yesterday. I'll be able to pull my truck out of the ditch if i I get desperate. Give them a try, they have been great for me.

I finally got some jigheads from rainbow jigs back in March after losing a couple BIG nates to cheap hooks on jigheads. What I got from rainbow has been excellent.

Andy's stuff is awsome. I have been using a little and I like it. I would buy from him again.
