Posting this for the .45 ACP guys that want a wee bit more "oomph" in an all mountain round. Load up a mag and hit the hills. Black Bears and Lions be warned.

255 gr. Hard Cast FN...you can leave the .357 and .44 at home

Note: Don't shoot many of these in a standard polymer gun (1 to 2 boxes max) and definately don't shoot the Super Outdoorsman without changing out to a heavier spring. The Super Outdoorsman are 1,075 fps with a 255 gr. HCFN. eek2

I'll go with my Glock 10 mm. Twice the kinetic energy of a .45...plus 15+1 rounds.

How much do you shoot Frank? I average in the range of 2-3k rounds a year, that's just from hand guns. My Colt AR gets about 500-700 a year. Let's hear your numbers?

Seeing as how it will push a 340 grain round at close to 1500 fps, the .44 mag will not stay at home.

That's the ticket. You can use it for an anchor if you lose yours.

If you only have the chance to get one round off when the man in the brown suit comes to collect rent, it had better be a good one. wink

Good call, must be these ground to ground projectiles.

Quite the +P+ 44 mag load......That's well into .454 Casull territory.

With the rent collector in your face, you would not feel it.

Yup. After years of loud women, rockn'roll, weapons and machinery, I have pretty bad tinnitus. I can't shoot a .22lr at the home range without my ears ringing. When I pull the trigger hunting...I don't hear or feel a thing. It's amazing how that works.

454 Casull is a complete monster, 3 rounds of the 260 grain Winchester loading left my shooting hand completely numb.

This was in the 6" Raging Bull, I remember the revolvers muzzle going high & torquing sharply to my right.

Quote from chuckhawks.com

"The price for all of this power is increased recoil, greatly increased recoil. The .454 generates almost 5 times the recoil of the .45 Long Colt, and about 75% more recoil energy than the .44 Magnum. (See the Handgun Recoil Table for specifics.) It is way out of the class of all but the most experienced and recoil tolerant shooters."

The .454 Casull is like a .44 magnum, but for men.

I've put quite a few +P+ rounds through a Ruger Super RedHawk Alaskan in .454 and it is brutal. I've never tried to catch the head of a 5lb sledge swung at full force, but I can't imagine the effect would be that different.
