Our family visited the falls about 6 months before the dam closed the gates. Dad bought a fresh fish from the indians and we brought it home to Montana. Had been talking about it this winter and my Sister ran across this on youtube:

Hadn't seen that one before. Looks way less crowded and a better grade of fish than the videos from the 1950's and 60's

Narration kinda grates on the ears.

I was there.....not saying I'm old but when I was in junior high, we went on a trip...and this site was part of the vacation. What I don't remember if the vacation was during spring time or summer vacation.

Time goes by to fast......

Many of the Bands on the Fraser dip net sockeye and then dry them on racks by the river. I have seen the areas and gear but it was after the season. It is serious work as these are subsistence fish so they are laying in a year's supply.

Thanks for posting. My folks took my brother and I there where my brother and I dug for arrowheads on the river bank. I think it was 1956 as we were told it was the last year it would be free flowing and the falls would be covered the next year. Excavating for native artifacts was still legal then, and we found some nice birding points. Like the river falling over the falls, that is a longtime gone.

Celilo Falls is not gone. It's still there. But it's now silent. But it's not gone, and it never will be. If the Dalles Dam is removed, or we choose to lower the pool level, Celilo Falls will once again make an appearance.

People chose to cover the falls, and people can choose to make them appear again. All it takes is the political will to do so.
