Will a Bruce style anchor with 20' of chain work on the lower Columbia? This is what I use in Puget Sound for my 21' Bayliner Discovery.

Maybe, but I would suggest a CR type anchor for rivers.

I have used a Bruce style anchor for years, downstream of the Portco ramp. Just be sure you have it rigged break away style.

22' Alumaweld Intruder, roughly 4000lbs. Your mileage may vary.

Thanks Slab. I hear that folks use drift socks to help keep their boats straight. Do they use one or two? And where do they hook them up at so they don't get in the way?

You may not need a drift sock....depends on your hull and how you are loaded.
They are almost always in the way and should be brought in when fighting a fish. Tie off to a corner.

Sometimes turning the motor a certain way will stop the sway.

Also, important to be set up to "plane".
You need a chock (or tie off point) on port and starboard sides.
Move your anchor rope to the port side to move to the right (river left), for example.
Useful to move away from another boat or to try fishing "new" water.

Use a float (puller system) for best results and plenty of rope when anchoring in the Columbia.
I carry 350'
7:1 scope or more depending on where I am.

I use two. They are on 15ft lines attached to the cleats just behind my helm.

For sure, have ball and be able to release from anchor as D-D suggested. I suspect it will be high flows with root wads and trees in the water.
