A second seal found over the weekend did not die from a shark attack. The Fish & Wildlife folks say it died from a gaff hook to the head. Interesting.

Oh man. Wouldn't it be nice if he and a bunch of his buds parked in the Columbia estuary for a while picking off both Stellar and CA sealions after Springers? Hopeful the cat is out of the bag and the Sharks have found a new food supply along our coast. Nature does have a way of correcting excess.

Seals and sealions are what brings them to Pt Reyes and the Farallones. The pinnipeds will need to concentrated, but they'll find them. It is also my understanding that GWS are seasonal, they won't be here all year. Need to know where they are and what they doing when the springers show.

Gaff to the head seems more reliable...just saying. And, if true, exactly how did that gaff wielder get so close as to attack said pinniped? Or, put another way, was there any evidence of landing net stuck between his teeth?

And, if true, exactly how did that gaff wielder get so close as to attack said pinniped? A few summers ago I was jigging for Salmon off Pt Defiance. I had just moved the boat and was in the process of grabbing my rod and preparing to start fishing when a small seal surfaced immediately behind the transom of the small boat that I was fishing in, (he was easily in reach of my gaff) but that thought did not cross my mind, however I did move to the back of the boat and hollered at it, as it swam away I noticed that it was tangled up with two herring dodgers.

Two sets of gear? Slow learner!! Actually, I have had two instances where young of the year harbor seal pups have followed my skiff to the beach and one I had to push away with an oar. He was way too young to be considered a threat......so he lived another day. Besides, he was just soooo cute. But on several occasions I have seen Orcas chasing seals. The seals were not so lucky in those encounters.

He was way too young to be considered a threat......so he lived another day. Besides, he was just soooo cute. But on several occasions I have seen Orcas chasing seals. The seals were not so lucky in those encounters. Having spent many years in "The Golden State" before retiring up to the PNW with my Seattle area bride I had the great pleasure of seeing a few up close and personal paybacks by GWS on the Nor Cal pinniped population! Truly a sight to behold and payback truly is a bit.. Only wish there were a few more located north of "The Red Triangle" to wreak havoc on these overpopulated salmon slayers! GWS normally show in Nor Cal off SF in early August along the beaches south of SF and work their way northward towards the Farallon Islands. Saw an attack on a early September day off Muir Beach while headed to Duxbury buoy to intercept large Chinook that would stage there on their way up the Sacramento river! Never will forget the hit on that harbor seal as that GWS flipped it in the air and came back to play with it before taking it! Amazing! Another bit of info on GWS was an incident that took place in September last year off Pier 39 while tourist were astounded as an attack took place in front of tourists eyes right inside of SF Bay! Makes you think twice about going into the water!
