Found a great method for catching LARGE Sea Lions last weekend at Neah! Simply trolling a whole silver in the 5lb class to the boat will produce shocking results! Pay careful attention when reaching down to release the fish. Strikes can be EXPLOSIVE and leave you all wet! It is normal to have shaky knees and aprehensive hands while releasing fish for the rest of the day! Bring a change of shorts as well when doing this type of fishing! |

Friend of mine found out last year that 55-60lb. kings work well too, watched him chase this fish around for about an hour when this big bull sea lion came out of nowhere and stole his fish, had it within 5 ft. of the net twice. |

I lost a 30-plus pound chinook to a sea lion last year off Vancouver Island. Was trolling near rocks, fish hit and ran in close, right where a herd (school?) of lions was. Tried to horse the fish out of the shallows but one particular sea lion swam faster than I could retrieve. Happened during a painfully extended personal dry spell, too. In retrospect, the episode is pretty comical. I wasn't too amused at the time, though. |

Whats type of pound test would it take to handle a seal? Well I guess I need to catch a silver before worring about the seal huh? At least you hooked something.

A few weeks ago when I was walking bace from a favorite fishing location I saw a baby seal start to roll twoard the water. I quickly ran after it so I could haras it. I put my foot right in front of it and began to poke at it. Eventually he rolled twoards me and I had to let him go. I imagine if I were to have killed that baby seal I could have saved thousands of salmons lifes. |

I think you could land a seal on 150 lb test maxima, but my experience was a HUGE bull sea lion! I needed about 500lb spectra. I wonder If they make a 25 weight fly rod, and a size 20/0 clouser minnow????? |

You know, killer whales may eat salmon. But to catch true BIG killer whales, you have to troll the sea lion. This is how I would do it. Start trolling a fly on the surface that a silver will take. But behind the fly have a 14/0 treble for the silver to tangle in. This way when the sea lion takes the salmon he gets a hook in the jaw. Then have a large grapling hook that will slide down your main line to the sea lion. Slow your troll down and start looking for a whale. Then just troll along in front of it. I would think the whale would love that. If the Makah's ever get to start again, they might want to try this method. I bet it would be a blast.

Was landing a small silver off Point Whitehorn last weekend, I had the fish right at the boat when in totally clear water a big ol' seal come up right from underneath the boat. Scared the crud out of me and I practically jumped out of the boat. Anyhow Mr. Seal did not get the fish. Too bad for him. Tight Lines Paul |

I was fishing with a buddy last year when he hooked into about a 30# nook. Imediately there was a seal hot on it's trail. Instead of horsing the fish in quickly he just free-spooled and let the fish do evasive manuevers on his own. Once we finally caught up to him again he had lost the seal and was very exited to get into that net and out of the water.novice
