Article states most Pacific Salmon are Plankton feeders. Not true! Average food sources in adult Pacific Salmon are prey larger than plankton, with the exception being Sockeye (and maybe Pinks) that feed mainly on krill (large zooplankton)!
Likely fed on anything it could wrap its lips (and teeth) around to get that big!

Wm Spear, up in Juneau, makes a beautiful lapel pin of this guy.

As to salmon feeding on plankton, it is actually true if you consider sheer numbers. Pinks and sockeye vastly outnumber Chinook and coho-the primary piscivores.

But the AK trollers will get them while they are still in the 20-30 pound range, at best.

And gill nets would deplete anything in the gene pool that wouldn't fit through 4 inch mesh.

Within a few generations, average size = 11#
