Having used 109's for over40 years I'm pretty sure that the first thing you need to do is take a pair of pliers and remove the clicker as it is probably rubbing against the end of the spool and making grinding noises and causing the reel to revolve roughly.
If those are the symptoms just take the pliers and pinch the clicker where it is attached on the end plate, after removal of the end plate of course, just twist the clicker and this will break it off you may want to put aqua seal or shoe goo over the little hole you have created or not, its really cosmetic.
When this simple fix was discovered most of the guys mooching instantly had a lifetime supply of reels as it was what killed all 109's this is assumeing that you have changed pawls and worm gears a few time.
One unnamed famous old timer went so far as to con his buddys out of all there old "junk" reels for"parts" and he really has a lifetime supply.
When I was a youngster the 109 was used for basicly everything from lake trolling to drift fishing and was and still is for many the staple of the salmon moochers with a bit of gray in there hair.

Well my original reply was to throw it away and buy a new one, as I do every 2 to 3 years but after reading native sons reply I may have to look at the dozen or so old ones I've got stacked in a box in the basement.

Kory most of the 109's that are in need of serious repair have the end plate and spool rubbing together lightly causing friction and grinding. Therubbing is nearly always caused by the spool making contact with the the inside mechanisim onthe (little pyramid) if the clicker is removed the rubbing stops and the reel can continue to function for years without the clicker. Not having your 109 in hand I can only speculate as to what is wrong with your reel . But if you use it for very long you will need to from time to time replace the worm gears and the pawl oil the drag disk and eventuallt remove the clicker cause sooner or later it will develop a slightly sprung spool and start rubbing. Good luck.
