For those of you interested in hitting the Kalama this weekend, here is a quick snap shot of what I found this morning (10/5).
I was hoping the recent rains had brought up some fresh coho so I hit the lower river at sunrise. The tide was going out but there was no action at all. Nothing rolling or jumping. No fish, no strikes.
I went upstream to try below Modrow Bridge but the WDFW still hasn't pulled the weir (when are they going to get rid of that thing!?). So I went up to the canyon at the deadline. It was nice to fish that section without any other anglers. Unfortunatley there weren't many fish either. I saw several spawning Chinooks, a few cohos (some dark, some with just a bit of color). I rolled what appeared to be a nice steelhead but I was slow on the hookset and lost it. No fish landed there either.
My last stop was the Red Barn hole. Again, I saw a couple fish roll but no strikes.
There are good numbers of coho at Beginners Hole but lots of anglers also. I didn't have my nine-weight so I called it quits.
The river is in great shape. The water level is just about perfect. The early coho run is finished and are stacked up at Beginners. The late run hasn't started yet. There are dark cohos and spawning Chinooks scattered throughout the river. Unless the late run of cohos starts up, it might be a tough weekend on the Kalama. <@)(((><
