Ok, I know some of you on the board paint your own plugs. So what I would like to know is do any of you use an airbrush? And if so what type or brand paint do you use. I don't really need to know what colors (going to play around with that myself)thanks.

I've been painting my own plugs now for several years now and I dip'em. solid colors seem to work just fine. I've had real good luck painting them that way.
Also I've seen plugs painted all different styles. green head, red back ,blues sides etc. keep in mind when you hold your plug up in front of you, like from the fishes point of view, what do you see? All the eyes and stripes and doodads the fish usually can't see. Look at the ones painted at the factory almost all are painted a solid color from the fishes point of view.

Just a thought and maybe something to keep in mind.

good luck

I've messed around with the airbrush, you can get some nice patterns and effects. I've been using thinned model paint, I think it's Testes(?). I have to agree with Ron Bob, when you start to paint your plugs, keep in mind what view the fish has on the plug.

when i was painting cars we used a urethane paint by ditzler called deltron when it was slow i would paint up some luhrs or flashers did a couple of spoons that caught fish regularly kind of like your pink humpy spoons but in white, well after about 6 months of being thrown in the tackle box and laying around it didn't seem to catch as manny fish, so i repainted it and it worked great again, the deltron paint was a sweet smelling and even i thought it smelled good i have to believe the urethane paint worked as scent?

Doug,

Remember that urethane finishes use extremely toxic catalysts to harden them. These catalysts are cyanide based, so painting with them without using a supplied-air breathing apparatus is risky. Urethanes are severe sensitizers and should not be used without certain precautions, such as supplied air and skin protection.

hi dan yes urethane paints had cyanide in them the epa has since banned use of them granted the acids that replaced them are no better, the paint sprayed was in a paint booth with proper protection and air supply and once cured does not propose any threat

Doug,

Sounds like you've got your bases covered. I was just warning those who are unfamiliar with urethanes about how toxic they can be. And the sweet smell of urethanes is double danger, because it leads you to want to take a sniff, which would definitely NOT be in your best interest.

Enamels really aren't as durable as urethane finishes, but they're a little more user-friendly. Permanent colored ink pens also work well as an cheap alternative.

Well, all you Picasso's out there, let us know what's working........
