Hi all-

I recently bought a 2001 208 Adventure that came with gimbal-mounted Scotty Downriggers.

My preference is to have a mounting plate directly on the gunwhale. Only problem, is that the mounting plate hole pattern is a bit wider than the gunwale. The dark holes in the picture are the mounting holes. The outside ones are for the captive nuts that the downrigger bolts to. The mounting holes fall in the radius of the gunwhale.

Curious if anyone else has run into this issue on a smaller Grady White or other boat and if you would mind sharing how you tackled the problem.

Thanks,

Mike

Weld some aluminum together. Make a base and a side to drop over the edge of the boat. Pretty easy to do actually

Not directly to answer your request but I have a 20 foot 1986 Grady Overnighter which is essentially your boat albeit having a few additional years of experience. I have used gimbal mounts originally for Penn electrics and now for Scotty electrics and also for an Ace Brutus pot puller when pulling shrimp pots. So far no problems; no doubt structurally it will outlast me. One thing, my boat does not have recessed inner walls for rod holders so it may be stronger than if recessed.

You did not indicate why you wanted to make the change but if it is a structural concern take my experience into consideration. You may be wanting to fix a problem which doesn't exist.

Yah, the gimbal mounts are springy. I can see the gunwale flexing when using the downriggers. Previous owner didn't have any issues, so what the heck. It could last forever. My preference is for stuff to look and feel robust.

On the angle bracket mounts.... I still have those brackets from my previous boat. Actually my preferred way to mount. On the Grady the bolsters (cushions) are in the way. I could remove them or reupholster, but trying to find the simple solution. Borrowing from other people's experience. smile

Thanks again

Mike.

More pictures of the gunwhale and cushion would help but I hope this is clear enough and maybe it would work for you.

I would put a 1/4" aluminum backing plate under the gunwhale then cut a 1/4" plate to exactly match the Scotty base plate. Move the Scotty base and aluminum plate inboard until you can thru bolt the outer 2 mounting points and the inner 2 points are inside of the gunwhale. Mark the location and bolt both aluminum plates together thru the gunwhale with the bolts in a location that allows for the Scotty base to be mounted over the top. Thru bolt the outer 2 mounting points and it looks like you should be able to bolt the inner 2 points thru the aluminum plate and clear the cushion. You could mock everything up with wood and have the plates cut by a machine shop.

Or you could just add the backing plates under the gimbal mounts and save the extra holes in your boat.
