No offense intended, but...well,duh...stocks are as low as the mid-70s.

thats million net pound removal, not the stocks....

One affects the other.

The first thing I glean from that graph is that the 100 year average of removing 63 million pounds a year is UNSUSTAINABLE .

The harvest applied to the stocks between 1985 and 2010 was obscenely high.

Enough so that total biomass has been driven down to a point that there is insufficient juvenile recruitment over the past decade to maintain the stock and the current level of fishing activity at removals of 40+ million pounds per year.

The article suggests going down to ~30 million pounds of removals will allow the biomass free-fall to stabilize. That 's the action required to keep the stock at its currently depressed levels

It will take much more drastic cuts to actually stimulate recovery.

This got WAY off topic. Does anyone have any other resource I can access? Or has everyone given up on halibut and is leaving then all to me?

We majorly need a fresh look at HOW we harvest. Continuing to give the lion's share to the commercial and bycatch is a suicide mission. We need way more priority given to rec fleet.

Yup. Halibut fishing is BIG BUCKS for a lot of hospitality and retail businesses. It costs a heck of a lot less quota to provide meaningful rec fisheries than it does to allow take as bycatch in a single drag fishery opener. Yet....

Yet...people like fish sticks and money for big biz more than money for coastal communities and sport fishing.
