Study mentions the June Hogs, which disappeared around dam closure although they may have hung on for a while. This study narrowed itself to the last 40 years (1980 or so). Ricker, when he looked as size loss, went back to the early 1900s, late 1800s.

Not to minimize the current findings but by not going back as far as paooible you minimize the damage observed.

Since the recent evidence has come to light, and confirms what we already knew, shouldn’t they have to change the statement in the PSCHMP that the OP is referring to?

No change in Chinook size was WDFW's mantra in the first Chinook management plan, approved by NOAA. To admit otherwise is to require action on fisheries that reduce Chinook age and size. Simply can't do that.

Back in the 1970's there used to be some big fish around. Howard Little whom used to live in Coupeville caught a 73.5 pound king near Hope Island. He donated the mount to the Oak Harbor Yacht Club many years ago. It ended up in a private individuals hands I found out a year or two ago. I happen to know whom he is, but I have no idea how he got it! I was right next to a guy that caught a 50 pounder right off South Mutiny Bay (near Freeland, Whidbey Island) back in the early 1990's. He was an older guy from Eastern Washington, and I think it was his first time salmon fishing. After they finally got it in the boat, I motored over to take a look. Told him that fish had to go 50 lbs or more. Him and his buddy said no way, maybe 35 or 40! I told him to follow me into the beach and weigh it on my Father in Law's scale and they did. It hit 50 right on the nose! I got their phone number as they didn't believe the scale, and wanted to take it up to Bush Point Resort and weigh it on their scale. Called them later, and sure enough, it measured the same on that scale! The told me they weren't going to mount the fish, and sure as heck, they didn't. You won't believe what they did with it! They traded it to the owner of the Bush Point Resort for several Humpies/Pinks, as he wanted it to mount it! Another interesting thing is I don't think the guy from Eastern Washington had a fishing license, as he seemed awefully quite and peculiar about catching that fish! Don't see those big fish these days, but am sure there are still a few come in a little over 50 lbs on rare occasion!
