Was just wondering what the preferred and most popular way of rigging??

Depends on the water you are fishing. I use everything from slinkies, pencil lead/tubing, pencil lead on a swivel, and free sliding slinkies and pencil lead.

It all really depends if you are drift fishing, side drifting, boon doggin', what the bottom of the river is like, etc.

Sorry for the vague response, but there isn't an easy answer to this question.

Personally, if I had to choose between them all, I'd probably stick with slinkies. They are easy to make, don't cost a whole lot, and one can very easily tell the difference between a fish and bottom with a slinkie.

Parker - armed with corkies, yarn, winners, MorTacs, rags, jigs, Pink Cone Heads and not afraid to use them all!

I would have to agree with parker,a fixed slinkie in most drift situations for steelhead.But varies widely.Good luck,

I like to use just plain old lead 90% of the time. Used to use slinkys but didnt like the feel and seemed always had to cut them down...just took to much time, crimping a piece of hollow lead off a tag on my main line and I'm fishing. If I get snagged just a quick jerk and Im free....Still carry some slinkies for those nasty boily snag infested holes, that you just cant fish lead without getting hung up every 2 feet...Just my oppinon....Jeff

personally I prefer lead usually with a slider unless I have to get down fast, if its a real snaggy hole I switch to bobber fishing which is what I do 90% of the time anyway.

Thanks for all the posts guys I was just wondering what everyone preferred. I always use a stationary piece of lead on a snap swivel.

Just started using slinkies this fall and I really like the feel that you get. Seems to be easier to feel the difference between the slide over the rocks and the bite then the hard jerks that lead gives. I think they will make a huge difference on steelhead. As for having to cut them down I make up several each with 5 to 10 shot in each, easy to change if you don't like the drift. My .02.

I've always been a slinky man myself, switching between stationary and sliding. I found something new this month that I'm going to try. I went down and fished the upper rogue river in southern Oregon on the 1st of this month with a guide and we used bouncing bettys for most of the day. The water was low and clear but the fish didn't seem to mind as we landed 22 adults over 20".
We were using 30" leaders and they didn't mind that big rubber ball bouncing their way. In fact, we had 5 doubles, 4 of which we landed both fish. It looks like low/clear might be what we have to deal with this year so I'm gonna give it a try.

Parker's right ... ther is no definative answer. In my boat, as we're usually always on the move, I fish lead and stationary (most of our snags are line wrapped around a boulder, not the lead hung). A good rule of thumb though if you're willing to go through the hassle of carrying everything you need to fish both ways, would be stationary in the pocket water ... sliding in the flatter water. Slinkies vs. lead ... tried slinkies for some time, don't seem to see a big difference in the number of hang-ups where / how we fish. But that's more a matter of personal preference!

I like to use lead, most of the time. Use lead-masters and a snap swivel and rig it sliding most of the time. For deeper runs. casting up stream and bait, will go to fixed. Really depends on the conditions and type of pool, and type of fish(sometimes)--mike

Depends on Water conditions for me also,I used a set of leadmasters for years ,so I still fish lead but my choice is a magnum slinky fished fixed,I really like sliders you just need more flow and it's really tough wil bait,it just doesn't catch up fst enough you end up missing a lot of water,I come prepaired,Heck if the waters big a nd fast ,I use a 1oz tp 1-1/2 of teardrop either customized with leadmasters to fit my swivel or my new trick ,use a short lenght of speaker wire with a few twists ,if it hangs up pull hard you're free.....Os
