More people want farmed salmon out of oceans

More people want farmed salmon out of oceans
By D.C. Reid, Times ColonistFebruary 24, 2010 Bob Tritschler: Have you heard Norwegian politicians making a plea for us to get farmed salmon out of our ocean or, at least, into closed-containment?

Answer: The former Norwegian attorney general, George Fredrik Rieber-Mohn, said wild salmon in Norway have as much chance of survival as the Norwegian hockey team against Canada. "If you want to protect wild salmon, you have to move salmon farms away from [wild fry] migration routes." Read what he had to say on catchsalmonbc.com, under Books and Articles, Fly Fishing.

Marine Harvest, the big company in Norway and B.C., I think has seen the writing on the wall. They have a pretty cool looking on-land facility in Sayward. The issue is electricity costs, and that could be underwritten by placing fish farms in Richmond, reducing transportation costs, and selling effluent to adjacent farms as fertilizer. Oh, and do note: salmon can grow in freshwater. Transplanted West Coast chinook, coho and pinks are doing just fine in the Great Lakes where there is no ocean.

Q: Where did that 13-pound McLure Lake brown come from?

A: The real question is where did the browns come from in the first place? You will be fascinated to know that fish were first raised in closed containers in the 7th century B.C. -- it's obviously not rocket science - ...... http://www.timescolonist.com/sports/More+people+want+farmed+salmon+oceans/2606177/story.html

Hmm...Attorney General of Norway warning BC to get the fish farms out before it's too late? The fact that the lion's share of fish farms in Canada are Norwegian owned and many of them transplants due to being "kicked out" of Norway should surely capture one's attention.

People did not used to want ranches or barbed wire either. Just like market hunting so should the way of wild fish go, if you want it you should have to go out and get it other wise you should have to buy farm raised products.
