The anti reverse is failing to engage on my little sahara 1000fd. It's fairly new and extremely well maintained. But after quite a few salmon and steelhead on this reel over the course of a year I'm not surprised it's failing now

When the anti reverse goes out, what part is actually failing? I assume it's the little springs? But I'm not sure. I cleaned the thing out and it works good for about 10 or so casts then starts failing again. But it only happens about 50% of the time.

Is there anything I can do to fix it? Besides buying a new part.

Fixed it.

To anyone with this same problem. And you can't afford a new part. Here is the fix.

Take the anti reverse part off the reel. There is 2 screws holding it together, take the top off and you will see a metal washer holding 6 rollers which are held in place by 6 springs. Take the washer off and then you will be able to remove each spring. Then gently straighten the top of the spring out and reinstall.
I did this to all 6 springs and put it back together. Making sure you put the springs back in the proper position/side of the roller.

It now has instant engagement. Before it would take about 10 rotations of the handle before it would engage.

To much oil and cold weather can affect level wind reels....I have a curado, that I re-oiled, then tried to use it 3 days ago.......it would cast about 10 feet.....so I took the time to take it apart, while on the river, paper towel, got oil out of the bearings, off the spool....put it all back together....1st cast, up in a tree.

Anyhow, the reason I re-oiled in the first place...was having the same problem you were having.......took apart, cleaned the anti-reverse, solved that problem.

Bet that would help your problem....

That was what I thought the original problem was. Oil in the anti reverse is usually the first problem.
And oil was definitely getting into the part causing an issue. I took it apart several times on the River tuesday and dried it out the best I could. It would work slightly better but not fix it.

Today when I completely disassembled the part there was oil under the rollers and on the metal washer.....a simple cleaning of that COULD have fixed the problem. But with a little fear of losing springs and/or forgetting how to put the part back together. I just decided to bend the springs a little because I knew it would 100% fix the problem....I didn't want to hassle with it again.
The only way it will go out again is if the springs actually break. Which I have never seen happen.

it is really fun when you set the hook and the handle spins backward at 10,000 rpms

Or when fighting a 20lb steelhead. And everyone laughs as your reel disrespects the hell out of your knuckles. As you was the fish snap your line

you need to replace the antiRB. you can can clean and dry all you want... it's toast. they run about $15. pop out the the old with with some light taps with a small hammar and screw driver. and replace with the new one in exact same order. if you put it in backwards the crank with turn backwards.

it doesn't matter the make of any reel! parts get old and warnout over time.

reel parts are no different than break pads, starters, batteries and clutches.

this is just nuts for anyone to reply that if your front brake pads wear out. you should buy a toyota.
