A couple of friends and I are planning to go to Craig in late September to fish silvers.
This will be a DIY trip. Rent a rig and explore the island for a week.
I’ve never been there or to Alaska for that matter.
Just looking for suggestions on places to stay, eat, sites to see from those that have been to Craig......and places to avoid the best we can. grin
Thanks,
SF

WOW, I've not been to Craig but doesn't look drivable to me. I just did a search and it shows "clear on the western part", right on the ocean.

Maybe I'm not seeing the whole picture but looks like a very travel intensive plan to me....

I'll look forward to a posting of your "trials and tribulations", when and if, you complete the DIY journey.

Good luck !!!!

I could be wrong, but I think you get on this bus called the Seven-Three-Seven.

Paker and Stam should be along shortly for some additional smart-ass comments.
And I'd bet that they know where all the hot Craigas chicks are, too.
They prolly want to keep that secret, though.

Its my understand based on research I did as well as talking to someone who has been there is that POW has a pretty well maintained road system.
Hopefully someone chimes in to verify that.

I made a solo trip to POW last May, and had a fantastic week of exploration. The number one piece of advice I can give you is to get in touch with DJ at Hollis Adventure Rentals. DJ treated me like family, and rented me a truck, a skiff, some camp gear, etc. http://www.harentals.com

Most people go to Craig to fish saltwater, and although many of the drainages are productive spawning habitat, most are too small to fish effectively. There are exceptions, especially if you are willing to drive and hike.

The road system is extensive, and even the gravel roads are fairly well maintained. Obey the speed limits, which seem to me to be really due to the large numbers of deer and bear you will encounter on the road systems. The black bear on the island are some of the largest you will ever see, big, beautiful, healthy animals. The scenery is spectacular, so slow down and take it all in.

There are coin op showers at the harbormaster office in Craig. There is also a well stocked outdoors/sporting good store.

Have fun, be safe.

Missy,
Thank you for the information.
I like the names he has given to the rigs he rents.

I leave the smart-ass comments for the likes of you. I happen to like Stonefish, so I'm more than happy to share any info with him. I've already PM'd him with the good stuff.

As for the rest of you.....

Hilltop bar is the only place you need to know about when in LasCraigas. Drink enough there and you don't need to worry about roads, gear, lodging, rivers, booked trips, or anything. You DO and SHOULD be worried about any and all "hot Craigas chicks", though. You've been warned.

I miss the fishing out of Las Craigas and wish I was going back there this year to fish with Robbo. Too damn fun!

Fishing with Robbo in Las Craigas should be on all of your Bucket List fisheries if you haven't done it yet.

Good luck up there Stonefish - you'll have a great time!

Meanie.

Have a great trip, Stone !

ETA:
If you see any Aborigine-looking feral kids running around, those are Paker's.
Keep track of your valuables.

Flights are book.
Looking forward to this trip.

No neos Danny, but I understand I might want to wear a bear bell should I encounter some of the local black bears. Hopefully it doesn't come off as a dinner chime.......grin

Thanks for the suggestions and laughs.
