Does anyone know who organized the no fishing protest that was all over the news?

Why havnt the fishing groups/organizations (CCA, PUGET SOUND ANGLERS) organize protests for the corrupt north of falcon process/ season setting process?

Baywolf, you have been a solitary voice on these matters while some on this forum tries to silence you.
Unfortunately emails to the governor get deleted without consequence.

Baywolf, you have asked people to get involved in the past but like most sportsmen we work 40-60 hours a week. I have joined CCA and signed up an additional 20 people. I was a member of Puget Sound Anglers but those organizations have fallen short... and silent on many issues...

We live in a liberal state with corrupt leaders and someone who is willing to organize a demonstration that makes the news gets more traction than emails or discussions on this website with sheep who are content for thier 10%

How effective would it be if trucks towing boats shut down the capital or downtown Seattle?

Who organized the protest?

I doubt that fishing protest did much, other than give the media something to do. They were going to open fishing back up in phases anyways, and there wasn't any political headwind to overcome to do it (as opposed to NOF. . .),

Priority2, There is a whole coalition of concerned citizens who are raising their voices for change! In fact, some of the HEAVY HITTERS in the sport fishing community have just sent a very loud shot across Kelly Susewind bow!

I can't post the letter they sent here, since it's hard to attach anything, but you can not only read the letter, you can join in the fight by visiting our Facebook Page.

The tide is turning...the sport fishing community has had enough of the BS in our fisheries and are coming together as a strong and vocal coalition....

We talk about getting shafted at north of falcon inside this small bubble and many would like to keep it that way... the corrupt local news will never report facts fairly.....
But they will report a protest...
Any protest...

I have the letter in the form of a PDF. If someone would be kind enough to teach me how to post it here, I would be more than happy too.

As an alternative, ANYONE can email us at: OpenNOF@Gmail.com and we will be happy to provide a copy.

A very dear friend of mine was kind enough to extract the letter. Although it is missing the graphs, it is plain enough to see the content and power of the letter: I remind all. This letter is from the Coalition listed on the bottom and is NOT from Washington Citizen Sportsmen.

Chair Carpenter and Director Susewind,

These are difficult and trying times for our state and nation as we grapple with the COVID-19 global health pandemic and yearn for a sense of normalcy, which for us includes getting anglers back out fishing. Sadly, for the anglers, businesses, and communities that depend on Puget Sound recreational salmon fisheries, there is very little optimism for the future under the draft Puget Sound Chinook Harvest Management Plan (PSCHMP) and a co-management system that is failing both people and fish. We are pleading with you to restore fairness and common sense to the management of Puget Sound salmon fisheries. We believe this can be done in a way that respects treaty fishing rights consistent with the Boldt Decision while also conserving wild, ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook.

For nearly a decade frustration has been mounting with the lack of transparency and growing inequity in the co-management process for Puget Sound salmon fisheries. Leaders in the recreational fishing community have expressed concern to the Commission and WDFW on numerous occasions, including in a 2016 briefing document outlining major concerns and bringing forward potential solutions to address the inequities in sharing the conservation burden in fisheries. Regrettably, the situation has only deteriorated. This year’s North of Falcon agreement for the 2020-2021 season has dealt a devastating blow to everyone who depends on Puget Sound recreational salmon fisheries with the loss of approximately 24 area-months of mark-selective fishing opportunity compared to last year’s meager seasons – including the almost complete loss of the cherished winter blackmouth fishery.

There is an urgent need for reform, particularly to address provisions within the draft PSCHMP that drove this year’s reductions. Earlier this month, the Northwest Marine Trade Association wrote to request that WDFW take “immediate action” by rejecting the draft PSCHMP due to the limits it places on mark-selective recreational fisheries with no true basis in conservation. This includes the arbitrary decision to establish an exploitation rate limit on hatchery-reared, marked Stillaguamish Chinook, resulting in a devastating impact on mark-selective recreational salmon fisheries. We want to underscore the importance of this request and ask that you not sign or submit the draft PSCHMP to NOAA Fisheries.

We recognize the various management challenges that occur in our fisheries and the importance of flexibility in respectful negotiations. Over the past twenty years, Puget Sound sport fisheries have drastically reduced their exploitation rates of ESA-listed Puget Sound wild Chinook through fishing closures and the adoption of mark-selective fishing practices. In fact, for conservation of wild stocks, across all 13 stocks of Puget Sound Chinook, the sport fishery has reduced its impacts by 69-87 percent. During this same time period, tribal fisheries have increased their exploitation rates for 9 of the 13 stocks, including some by more than 200 percent. Year after year WDFW has agreed to fishing seasons that shift an ever-increasing share of the conservation burden for protecting Puget Sound Chinook to the recreational community while allowing many tribal fisheries to drastically increase their impacts. Unfortunately, as history has shown, the current process does not allow for any meaningful respectful negotiations. This approach has led to some of the most constrained fisheries, impacting small businesses throughout Washington and the Pacific Northwest, and is not consistent with our region’s efforts to recover Puget Sound Chinook.

While the overall abundance of wild Puget Sound Chinook is down by about 28% since the 1990s when the species was listed under the ESA, returns of hatchery Chinook are at or above their 1990s levels. However, due to the continual shift of ESA exploitation rate impacts to tribal fisheries, our mark-selective recreational fisheries have lost considerable access to hatchery Chinook. If this was not enough of a challenge, the new exploitation rate limit on marked Stillaguamish hatchery Chinook further limits the ability of mark-selective Puget Sound sport fisheries to access returning hatchery Chinook. This is what drove the near complete closure of the winter blackmouth fishery, which resulted in no actual conservation benefit for Stillaguamish Chinook this year.

Given these current circumstances, harvest of Puget Sound Chinook is expected to shift even further towards Puget Sound treaty tribes, compounding the already existing imbalance in harvest sharing, which has averaged out to be approximately two-thirds/one-third over the last five years.

We respectfully ask that WDFW reject the current PSCHMP and focus its efforts to secure federal approval and permitting of a harvest management plan that 1) more equitably shares the conservation burden of protecting ESA-listed Puget Sound Chinook; and 2) provides for equitable sharing of harvestable hatchery-reared Chinook. If this preferred option is not attainable, we ask that WDFW submit a stand-alone plan for the state’s fisheries.

Sincerely,

Coastal Conservation Association of Washington

Great letter! How about forwarding it to J.T. Austin, Jon Snyder and the Governor? Or, would they not even receive it, or read it if they did?

Has anybody seen a recent copy of the PSCHMP? If so, would you mind sharing it?
