You cross a silver for the hook nose...

A chum for the snaggly teeth and vertical bars....

A chinook for the dense spotting pattern....

And a sockeye for a backdrop of scarlet skin?

not lots....but some.

Them ones eat the bestest. Real delicacy.

Similar to chrome "brite" river humpy.

'Specially if they cut well.

I agree, a cherry salmon. More 'nook than chum or sockpink. 2cents

Similar but certainly NOT the same.

Spots and bars are a totally different pattern than a mature coho. Also check out the distinct difference in the trademark stark-white coho lip-liner. Teeth on a silver are also much finer, especially on the bulbous kype. Note how large and broad-based the teeth are on the mystery fish... hard and calcified just like those on the tip of the lower jaw of a mature chum.

It is generally accepted that there are 3 subspecies of Oncorhynchus masou in Japan, namely, Masu salmon (Oncorhynchus masou masou (Brevoort)), Amago salmon (O. masou ishikawae Jordan & McGregor), and Biwa salmon (O. masou rhodurus Jordan & McGregor or O. masou subsp. Kimura)

Genetic analysis of the various masou:

The haplotypes of Masu salmon and Amago salmon were similar. On the other hand, 17 of the 26 sites had substitutions characteristic of Biwa salmon. A matrix of genetic distances and maximum parsimony analysis among the haplotypes indicated that Biwa salmon is genetically more distant from Masu and Amago salmon, than Masu salmon is from Amago salmon. This means that Biwa salmon diverged from the common ancestor of the Oncorhynchus masou complex before the divergence between Masu salmon and Amago salmon.

Amago-masu: Oncorhynchus masou ishikawae (Jordan and McGregor, 1925)
Original habitat is in Western Japan, amago is easily identifiable by its distinct red/orange spots all over its body. Sea-run amago is called Satsuki-masu.

Biwa-masu: Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus (Jordan and McGregor, 1925)
Endemic to Lake Biwako in Shiga Prefecture.

Believe it or not, fish managers actually tried to transplant cherry salmon to US waters. Like most out-of-basin efforts to introduce "foreign" salmonids, it failed.

Nonindigenous Occurrences: This species was planted in the North Branch of the Boyne River, a tributary of Lake Michigan in Charlevoix County, Michigan, by the Michigan Department of Conservation in 1929 (Parsons 1973). Cherry salmon were stocked into Hewitt Lake and Puget Sound in the state of Washington circa 1974 (University of Washington Fish Collection 1996; Courtenay et al. 1991).

Means of Introduction: Two hundred 18-month old fingerlings were intentionally stocked in Michigan by the Michigan Department of Conservation. Stocked in Washington.

Status: Failed in Michigan. Presumably failed in Washington.

Impact of Introduction: Unknown.

Remarks: Voucher specimens: Washington (UW 21588).

Salmo g or Smalma, either of you around when they tried stocking these in Puget Sound back in 1974?

Eyefish,

I remember that the Masu were reared and released at Minter Creek hatchery. I never heard that any adults returned.

I caught a juvenile Masu in Kamchatka when I was there. I was totally puzzled until I was told they have a small run in that river.
