Facebook picture post brought up a couple of questions since I've never fished rags before. 1) What is the typical sized backer rod used? 2) Do you use a shorter leader to keep them in the fishes face since they should be more bouyant than a puffball or yarn fly? 3) Or do you adjust the size of the backer rod to adjust for bouyancy? Thanks
Ken

I use the white 1/2" rod which is hard to find but 3/8" is good too and equally hard to find. I run a shorter leader with them, and that being said I rarely use them.

1) whatever you can find from 1/2 to 1 inch..

2) yes, you want to use a shorter leader. ( I use a 14" leader)

3) No need when using shorter leader.

Don't have any pictures of the set up, but do have a few i could spare, also have about 14' of the 3/8" white backer rod, I can get any size you want, color is a issue, 1/4" grey i think, 3/8 white, 1/2" white, can get all the sizes just not all that up on which size and color, been awhile, the problem with getting it, you can only by like 3600 ft min, i can get it in 2-3 buisness day's if in stock, or 5 day's if has to be ordered, haven't checked current priceing, but paied 120.00 8 years ago for 3600 ft. It is readly available, if interested let me know, Doug

I use 1/2 open cell foam for my rags 18-25 inch leader. And rarely fish anything else. And I catch a few on them. I tie them in assorted colors in the same manner as the Aero Puffs they sell at Sportco smile.... Matt

This is a picture, that was posted for last year.....if you can use any thing from this.....go for it!!!!!

1. Sequins, are used at the top and bottom, of the rag........for color and strength

2. 2/0 hooks

3. 10 - 15 pound leader

4. Found the "rag material", at the then Boeing Surplus store in Renton....sheets, were good size. Used a .270 shell casing, to punch out the "rags". The color is a pink.....used with a bright green or purple or black or "whatever", they just "look like fish catchers".

Sold thousands of these, in some of the local stores........Can tell ya for sure, they work awesome on the Hoh, Queets, upper Quinault, Humptulips, Wynoochee, and Satsop.

Good luck.............

I use open cell foam like used on the aeropuff and aeroflies open cell puts out a nice bubble shine perfer longer leader to get more action out the lure as it bounces down the river.

I use 1/2in white backer rod about 1/2in to 3/4in long on a 24" leader and a 1/0 or 2/0 hook.I only use one color combo for all conditions. But don't waste your time making any as they don't catch fish and are to much of a pain in the ass to deal with.JK.Good luck,
SZ

Damn, SZ! I just looked in my email archives and noticed that you spilled the beans about that rag to me in March of '05!

Gotta admit - as rags go, it's a fish killing combination! thumbs
