Anybody fish for whitefish in the South Fork Sky?

I see you can fish whitefish in the South Fork of the Sky until the end of the month (up from Sunset Falls).
Anyone try this? I was thinking it might be fun to try with my 5 year old. Tasty fish, too.
Small float and tiny jigs or nymphs? Size 0 or 1 spinners, little spoons...how do you fish 'em?

Whitefish will eat anything. Small, size 6 - 16 beadhead nymphs under a small Thill
or Thingamabobber float. A 3 - 5 wt. fly rod with a floating line and foam indicator or Thingamabobber works best, but probably not for a 5 year old. They like somewhat faster water. Shallow side riffles or tailouts. You'll catch some some bows too.

Yeah, I was thinking spinning rods for that reason. I haven't fished the South Fork much...I was thinking they'd be in the deeper pools in winter, but sounds like you are saying find a little flow. It's pretty up there and fun exploring with a kid either way...

We slay them in good numbers drift fishing size 14 white fish flies (bi-mart bought and locally tied) running them on double rigs like you would set up a shrimp fly for bottom fishing with your slinky or pencil lead on bottom. Tip the flies with maggots and you are money. Make sure you keep your drift some what tight lined.
Small yellow or blue rooster tails are money as well, good luck.

Single egg on a # 6 hook drifted thru the shallows has worked for me in the past.

Yep - they tend to like the shallows with a little bit of speed. They'll stack up by size with the larger fish at the head of the riffle. One small riffle can hold many and they don't really spook. So when you do find them, that spot should produce several fish.
Growing up fly fishing, I hated whitefish because I was always after trout. Have caught some BIG ones in the 5 - 7 lb range. They do eat good and smoke up even better. Cedar planked whitefish with an almond crust is hard to beat. Enjoy.

Thanks all. I'm kind of excited to give it a shot. Since I might have both my boys (3 and 5) with me, it'll for sure turn into a bit of a [Bleeeeep!] show. I can't be wading and I'll have to pick and choose my spots.
For access upstream of sunset falls, am I better off sticking with highway 2 and looking for spots where it comes close to the river? Or is it better to take Mount Index road (right before the bridge on 2) and follow Mnt Index road/Riverside road and access the river from that side?

Something like this here Basically crushed almonds and good mustard (I like spicy whole grain brown myself) cooked on a cedar plank. It's pretty damn good. With rockfish, hali, lings, mahi, grouper, walleye, perch too...any white meat fish will work well. This is a pretty common Great Lakes region recipe and they eat LOTS of Whitefish & Walleye up there.

Break out the bug rod.
Lightning Bug, Copper John or Prince Nymph ties on a jig hook with a slotted tungsten bead fished under a indicator will catch you some WTs.
