Hi there,

My wife and I are taking a relatively short trip to Kauai this month to celebrate an anniversary and get away from the kids.

Given the anniversary thing, not gonna focus on fishing much. But I'm tempted to throw a 10 foot travel spinning rod and reel in.

Anyone ever fished off the island? Ideas or tips? Outside shot we'd do a charter together, but probably more likely to do some casting here and there off the beach....

Thanks!
John

I have fished a lot from the beach on Oahu and the Big Island, but same techniques will apply in Kauai. Whipping is probably the most popular method or Dunking. Do a you tube search for Braddahs shore fishing tips and techniques if your unfamiliar with whipping or dunking. They have some good how to videos and there are also others. As to where to fish, can't help there. Best tips for spots to fish have come from people I ask who are working in some local store, not necessarily a fishing store.

For example, the Boyz at Enterprise Rent a Car told me about some great locations when I showed up to pick up my car. Whipping and Dunking do not require much gear.

Good luck and Great Trip.

Mike

On Maui the fishing store employees weren't interested in helping tourists.
Also had to stop my wife from buying small baggies she thought were cute cause they had hearts on them... Those are for drugs honey.

We caught a few small reef fish on your typical Carolina rig with shrimp. Definitely bring a few shallow diving stick baits. Overall we weren't very successful but it was sure fun.

Use a throw net.

You can catch those little fish like you see in an aquarium

I hope for his sake he gave up the idea of fishing in HI and pursed a vacation filled with matrimonial mattress thrashing.

Thanks guys. Sorry for the delay. I ended up taking a 4000 series reel with braid and picked up a 10 foot Shakespeare steelhead rod at the local Walmart. No huge catches, but caught a few colorful fish tossing rotators. Also had a couple fish blow up on top water plugs without hooking them. Fun being able to walk outside to the beach at sunrise and sling some lures. Also did a couple hikes to isolated beaches - always more fun having a rod in tow. Ironically I ended up using a steelhead rod more in November in Hawaii than I have in Washington in 2020 thus far.
