Does anyone know what are proper methods to preserving upland bird (phesant, quail, etc) feathers?
I sometimes go upland bird hunt though I'm not very successful at it but if I do get one I'd like to keep feathers to use for tying flies.
Your advise is much appreciated.

You can always pluck and sort the feathers or skin the bird, scrape any fat off the skin side and cover it with borax (not Boraxo, which is a mixture of borax and detergent). Leave it for a week or two, changing the borax occasionally, until it is thoroughly dry, then shake off the borax and store the skin in a ziplock bag with a couple of mothballs.

Wow, that's much simpler than what I expected.
I was expecting some scientific formulas or something... kinda like curing eggs. laugh
Thanks for great info! Guys.

I pluck, dry and zip. Seems to work fine!
