Anyone found a good pen for marking your punch cards? The material is kind of slippery and either doesn't write when using a ballpoint pen or smears when using a felt pen. I tried really hard to keep my punch card dry last week and still could hardly write on the card on a recently caught fish in the rain. What do you use?

I have the best luck using a new/fresh ballpoint. Black. New being important. Good luck.

Use what Terrel Owens uses. Sharpes work good. Fish On!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Small fish suck, so do rainbows and I'm not talking trout. Good luck to everyone fishing tomorrow.

Sharpie ultra fine point permanent marker!!

Just make sure to keep the cap on tightly as the tip tends to dry out.

Tight lines

I used a "Space Pen", it is the one that has a cap, and is about 3 inches long when capped. I got that one since I carry it in my pocket all the time. It writes on the punch cards first time every time though. Not cheap, it was $4, but I have had it for about a year.

All good ideas. I didn't know they make a fine point permanent marker. I remeber having better luck with new ball points just don't remember to find a new one. What is a space pen and where do I get one? Lastly, I might as well keep it in my sock like Terrel cause I practically have to take my waders off anyway to find my punchcard in my wallet. Thanks all.

Sharpies ... keep a wad of them in each boat and they will ALWAYS write! I've seen bulk packs at Costco before for pretty cheap laugh

I brought this same topic up last winter. Of the many good suggestions, the 2 most reliable were the ultrafine point sharpies already mentioned and one called "writes-in the -rain" available at forestry/survey supply stores.

Eric pretty well hit it on the nose.

The ultrafine point Sharpies work great but they are not specifically made for writing in the rain.

The catch record cards are made with either genuine "Rite in the Rain" paper by the "J. L. Darling Corperation" in Tacoma or a similar imitation.

This same company makes an All Weather Pen .

Here\'s some local dealers.

SteelyDon, I thought you only used pencil lead you pounded to a point to record your fish. On my punch card I'm using the FIFO approach to recordng. I'm down to my 10th recorded fish and my 1st 3 slots now have lost their date/river markings. By the time I get to the bottom of the card, I can start over at the top and fill in the blanks???

A space pen is one reputedly invented for astronauts. It has a special pressurized cartridge, and special ink to write in cold or hot, and upsidedown even. Its a gimmick, but it fits in my pocket, and writes on almost anything.

AK Floate, I stopped using the pencil lead method a long time ago. You are thinking about the rock I used to break of the deer head when I broke my knife. It was your card I was referring to when I mentioned smearing, you either need to get a smear proof pen of quit fishing in the rain (and by water). I am waiting to find out what the ticket cost is for smeared lines on your punch card (probably the same as writing with pencil lead), I guess that will be anther post.
