I've been fishing mostly floats with bait and yarn over the last couple of years. The one time I feel compelled to dragging bottom again is when the water gets real cold and I feel like I need a spin-n-glow to "wake them up." In fact spin-n-glows is the only thing I miss about drift fishing.

I was wondering what folks favorite cold water lure is when float fishing? Does anybody fish spinning lures under floats and if so how does that work?

Or do I just leave everything at home except a box of spoons?

Thanks in advance!!!

Hell, rig a spin'n glow up under your float. Put your float on, a barrel weight to activate float, bead, swivel and your 24"-30" leader with spin'n glow...Boooyah fish on! Oh yeah, make sure you adjust your depth according to the barrel weight, not the end of your leader like jig fishing. Dont forget the spoons either

You could put on a colorado spinner instead too. Those wake them up good in cold water and you can still use them under a float.

I personally don't ever put something that is buoyant below my slip weight while float fishing because under slow water conditions it can actually make the hook float straight up against the line....not good.

When the water is real cold they will still take a jig without any problem. One thing you might try tho is downsizing some, go to a 1/8th ounce size jig or even smaller. Or as you mentioned go with straight eggs, worm, or shrimp....always hard to beat these.

Sometimes I use a wee dick knight,When I do this I hold the float back so the spoon flutters in an ark across the drift, when the water is low and clear I also use clear plastic floats

I just use smaller jigs. 1/16oz jigs on a 1/0 hook with rabbit hair and/or schlappen rather than maribou. Also use dark colors. I took this fish in low, cold, clear water on a purple rabbit hair jig.
