G.LOOMIS rods weight secret ? - 03/25/08 09:25 AM

Hello,
I am an european salmon angler.
Being interested in buying a good rod for the salmon fishing, I have contacted G.LOOMIS company in order to obtain the approx. weight of some rods I am interested in, as they don't put this information in the catalogs, website... and also those rods are not available in stores here in Europe, so I was not able to touch them before purchasing (the rod's weight is very important for me).
The rods I have asked for was:
STR1163C
STR1104C
STR1082C
STR1143C
STR1084C
I was very surprised that it was NOT possible to get this information from G.LOOMIS customers service about the regular production
They sent me just this:
"Couldn't you go by the line weight and the power? The STR1163C is 6-12
line weight, med. Light power? Wouldn't that tell you how light they
are?

So, it is regretable (because I am sure these are the great rods) but I cannot buy overseas a product that I don't know the basic details about (and there is the strange behaviour of the producer which don't want to communicate the basic details of its production !).

So maybe someone of you can help me with the choice of the good rod (between LAMIGLAS, LOOMIS (or someone else)), that weigh not much and similar to the rods mentioned above.
Or inform me about approx. weight of the rods.

Thank you in advance and have a nice day

"So, it is regretable (because I am sure these are great rods) but I cannot buy an overseas product that I don't know the basic details about"... No regrets.

Suppose you have to deal with warranty issues to a company that is this "revealing" in the beginning regarding a potential sale to a new market/individual.

As far as weight is concerned, they will most likely be, bar none, the lightest in their category (provided they are not GL2's).

There are multitudes of "other" manufacturers in the S/S realm that will provide you with the information you seek. Lami, St. Croix or OEM brands such as Rainshadow all offer great product with service to match.

Good luck dzeekee and welcome aboard.

Just like their fly rods, I was told that all rods are unique in their weights and even though 5 rods are indentical in make, model, etc. there is no way they are 100% the same weight. I was told this by a Loomis rep because I wanted to get a true weight of a GLX fly rod.

Balance is also an important consideration. I have tested two similar float rods by different manufacturers and found the lighter one was not as comfortable to fish with as it was not as well balanced as the slightly heavier one.

For that much money, I would want to hold it in my hand.

Thanks a lot for your opinions,
that's sure I am not seeking for the exact weight, just wanted to have an idea of the weight of one 9' casting rod.

PS
of course, I agree that the balance is important.

I'm not entirely convinced that the customer service rep who answered your email understood what you wanted to know.

Perhaps there was some strange language barrier...

It seems that they thought you were asking for the "weight" of the rod, ie: light, med., heavy...

Are you curious for shipping purposes?

Suffice to say that a Loomis flyflicker will be "light"...

While I don't know the EXACT weight down to the milligram of the rods you listed dzeekee... my guess is that they probably range anywhere from maybe 9 to 12 oz. or so?

My advice would be to get a Sage. As an angler of atlantics you should appreciate the fish in my avatar \:\)

They understood very well, herebelow you will find a complet email's exchange:
--------------------------------------------------------------
Me:
Hi, Could you please tell me the weight of the folowing rods : STR1163C STR1104C STR1082C STR1143C STR1084C And also with which blank (IMX GL3,...) are made Steelhead Series (New!) Thank you in advance and have a nice day. J. Dziki

G.LOOMIS:
I cannot give you the weight of the rods because we don't weigh our rods. Why? Each rod may weigh differently due to the rods are
handmade and someone may put more flexcoat on the rod or even do an extra wrap.
Usually, when we come out with a new rod, we do not offer it in a
blank for at least two or three years. The new rods are a variable graphites-a combination of graphites..

Me:
Thank you for the quick reply.
I don't need the very exact weight, just approximative one (+/- gr).
In order to have an idea of weight, I cannot to see the rod here in
europe, and the weight is important to me. So before to order overseas I
need to know the weight.

G.LOOMIS:

Good Fishin',
-------------------------------------------------

Some of you suggest the SAGE rods, I think they offer only fly rods ??
I precise, I am looking for a casting rods.

Thanks for all replies

Have a nice day

Try this link. These are the Sage gear rods some of us are fishing. I know guys besides myself using the CT 290, 296, 2106, & 386 & in spinning the SP 196

http://www.sageflyfish.com/dyn_prodlist.php?k=85155

Shoot them an e-mail & be specific about what weight your looking for, I read your e-mail & it confused me.

My big question to you is...do you want to know the weight of just the blank or the finished rod??

finished rod,
and not for shipping purposes but for fishing, I love fishing with the light gear and I am wishing the L/M 8' or 9' casting rod of about 5oz of weight.

And thank for the SAGE links.

which brings out the balance issue -- ever notice that the sage has that heavy doorknob looking counterbalance on the butt? ;\)

i'd take a balanced rod over a light, but top-heavy rod any day.

Re: G.LOOMIS rods weight secret ? - 03/27/08 02:08 AM

Sounds like you were very clear in what you were asking, but Loomis might have mis-construed the question based on your location, what weight is a rod? (don't know, just a guess). Some people want to know actual weight (ounces, grams, ect) others want to know whether it is a med-heavy weight , heavy weight, light weight, ultra light weight...hopefully this doesn't give you a bad taste for Loomis, they make great rods and whenever I have called them, the people at customer service have been exceedingly helpfull (A shout out to Fran, Andrew and Anna!) But here locally I don't think as many customers are concerned with actuall weight...

If you shake it...and it feels good, what more do you want.
My recomendation is to go to a fishing forum full of knowledgeable anglers, let them know what your application is, and let the opinions fly!
