sleds on the Hoh - 10/28/08 12:30 AM

I have seen the Indians drift gill netting with sleds on the Hoh. Are sleds okay for us to use there and if so where to put in?

Don't go there, the old say, just because you can, doesn't mean you should. The OP river are a special place, please don't spoil them with sled traffic.

If you go in the next few days there is a pretty good run from Oxbow down to Cottonwood, or maybe Barlow's, a 20' plus sled should fit through there, out and back no problem.

Don't take a sled to the Hoh unless you plan on buying new tires.

Not a threat, but definitely a warning.

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/30/08 06:07 PM

I am sure it could be done, but I have yet to see the boat and the driver in this part of the woods that could pull it off.

I got to see Conrad Scott of Scott pumps rip some AK rivers this spring and it was pretty mind bending to see what guys like that can do with the right machine.

On-sighting skinny channels in 4 inches of water at 50+ and making a class 3 rapid look like flat water for starters.

Here is some footage of the tame stuff from that outing.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTyWmeO3388

The Oxbow would seem easier than quite a few of the sections in the lower river. Those jet boats run shallow, but they don't run in no water with a grate full of rocks.

The problem with sledding the Oxbow isn't the water depth, it's the TWO 90deg turns within a couple hundred feet and the fact that there are HUGE boulders all the way up and down that you'd have to dodge.

Granted, at around 20,000 cfs that whole zone flattens out and covers all the rocks, ...there wouldn't be an S-turn to make, just trees to dodge.

I have floated it in a raft at near 20Kcfs and it's cake... other spots on the river aren't: try the dead end road @ above 16K cfs wink

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/30/08 06:22 PM

With regards to that Video...
It kinda makes me sick to see boats like that operating in a river in that capacity. Joyriding is stooopid!

I'd love to see the under water video of a school of fish when that boat goes by. Sportjets suck cause they are way too loud.

Sorry FR.

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/30/08 06:39 PM

Yeah I hear ya Ryley. I was actually on the river working on the day that group went by. Not the most serene setting to say the least.

That sort of thing, in this area, would seem to be pretty inappropriate. Running a sportjet for fun in the mud of of an alaskan river in the middle of nowhere is a different sort of thing though and I think it can be done responsibly with little impact to wildlife and other users in the area.

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/31/08 11:05 AM

You would stuff the bow into a roller going upstream before you even had a chance to F'up the 90 degree turn in any hard boat. I would do it with Dave Kilhefner's jet raft, though. That thing has a keel and turns on a dime, and your not going to submerge the bow of an inflatable.
Posted by: hohbomb73

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/31/08 12:03 PM

Seems like in recent years the channel where those "rollers" are has narrowed. Either that, or the rocks on river right have moved around a bit.

At the angle you have take with a 17ft db to avoid the rock (or the big hole, depending on cfs) there just isn't much room to screw up. Doubt it would be much different backing it down...

It'd be worth every penny of $500 to watch someone "try", imho...
Posted by: Neal M

Re: sleds on the Hoh - 10/31/08 12:12 PM

Two years ago the high water pushed a bunch of rocks and gravel into the right side of the approach channel. I used to hug that right bank as I slid down above the rock, then pulled to get to the left of the big rock. First time I rowed it after the change was in Sol's boat. I found less water and more gravel than there was before smile Lucky that we had super man logo on the boat or who knows what could have happened smile

A friend of mine has built a plastic boat with "raft" exterior...(I will have to get pics to cover my poor description), they had a 200hp sport jet installed, overall length including "bumpers" is about 18' with seating for 3 brave souls. maybe we should ban all sleds, bay boats, jet skis, snow mobiles, 4x4's, atv's and dirt bikes. We could then drive Prius cars, sailboats, and use hiking boots. The same lame old arguements and complaints never change. And as far as harming the fish, I see fly guys up to their armpits tromping all over spawning beds every year on the Skagit. Okay, so the feeling of those here is that even the the Hoh nation uses sleds to drift net the river we should not use sleds to fish with hook and line there?

I've heard all the rumors and read all the stories of the bad that will happen if one dares to run a sled on the peninsula. I know 2 different guys who have run their boats over there and had no problems with vandalism. One of the guys had some serious problems with a big boulder though. Personally I'm not concerned with either of those things but I still won't run my boat there.
