Shrimp rodeo

Well, the time is here. Area 9/10 close after 2 whole days of shrimping. What a crock. I guess that next year area 9/10/11 will be open for 4 hours, 1 day, for the annual shrimp rodeo. So the great state of washington now has 2 more days of shrimping than North Dakota does. Sure am glad the state looks out for the recreational fisherman, imagine if they didn't!!

What a disgrace, a few hours on two days, go join a bazillion wankers who set their gear right up-tide of yours and then wonder why it gets tangled up, and then you can't turn your head or that same wanker cuts your gear loose! I did not even bother this year.

Another thing that seems off...in years of bad shrimping, DFW extends the season so we can catch more of the weak shrimp population, then on good years they cut it off quickly, when populations are likely strong....the logic of that kind of management strategy escapes me.

The only good thing to happen recently during shrimping was when the tide changed year before last about noon, created a tangled mass of at least 50 pots, which all exited east into the shipping lanes, and then north towards Whidbey hanging beneath a cluster of floats....quite amusing watching the pursuit flotilla fade away while trying to recover them.

Just curious, do the commercial guys get to shrimp most of the year down there?

Not that it is a good thing but this year's season isn't exactly a surprise is it? Isn't this about the amount of time that would have been predicted? It seems like a lot of the justification for the short season down there is that the shrimping pressure is off the charts compared to what it was even short while ago.

Yeah, pressure might be on, but you have to believe the people that set the season on how much "pressure" there is. Now that shrimp, halibut, crab and salmon seasons seem to be exclusive seasons, the "pressure" is on whatever season is open.

Where did you see that it is closing for sure after Wednesday?

I would have thought we would have a had a couple more days. There were way less boats than the last two years out there. Seems odd. Usually less boats on the water, means less people on the water, means less fish caught, means more shrimp available for some of us who would like to be on the water. Strange it is, everyone in our area that was out said there were less boats out, not even a line up to launch except for briefly right before the drop time. Makes ya say hmm....

Sounded like there was hardly any pressure at all up in 8-1 too.

This has nothing to do with the amount of shrimp but everything to do about enforcement costs. It costs them a ton of money for every hour it's open and they make all their money on day one of the opener so there's no incentive for the State to keep it open. All BS!!!!!!!
