SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/13/09 05:32 PM

Howdy:

Just got home.....took pictures of a sunk driftboat.....must have happened Saturday afternoon.....cause it wasn't there during the week.

Up from the the old Satsop bridge and down past the "big block" below Cemetery Hole.

If the owners read this, it'd be easy to get out???? Some long rope, to pull from gravel bar side.....4-5 guys to break it free, would swing right over to the gravel bar side. Turn it over, get water out, row to launch......I'd not wait to long......maybe rain coming.....boat looks fine from what I could see......If you need help....ask and I'll help out.......360-580-6996 cell phone....

That would be my take on what happened.......picked the wrong "slot"....that is a scary 20 yards...and it changes from 1 high water to the next........1st time I run up it a week ago........got my "butt cheeks tight".....

I was going to comment that there must have been some gnarly water right above where the photo was taken because it looks to be resting in some pretty non-descript water. Should be able to hook a rope to it pretty easy.

If the boat owner didnt want the public to know about it, its too late now.

What a bummer... good to hear everyone is ok though.

Hopefully the guy will be able to get his boat back.

Hope everyone is OK and good on DrifterWa for offering to help. Having something like this must be pretty frightening but it probably helps when others offer to help you out.

I heard from Dave today. No mention of sinking his boat. He did mention some fish caught Sat. though. . . . .

I thought that too, but it looks too light to be Daves boat.

Not me. Mine's black. That would suck hard though.
I read it and thought ugh....I did a new river to me yesterday without a another boat. I talked with several people who have done it recently and felt good but nervous. Turns out it was fine. I did get out and scout once though.
Hope whoever it was is safe and warm.

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/13/09 11:23 PM

Talked to the owner today as I was taking out. They tried to get it out this afternoon but weren't successfull. I guess it shifted since the above picture and is now wedged against a log that is making recovery difficult.

He said he took the wrong braid and got up against a log and it went down fast. Everydody was ok, but they lost some gear in addition to the boat.

This must have happened right after i left...I did see a Clacker Craft go down the wrong channel and they made it down fine.

You can get that boat out with little effort.

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/14/09 12:55 AM

Sorry, but there aren't "salvage rights" in fresh water. The boat remains the property and the responsibility of the owner.
Oceans are a different story, but even there, keep your maritime attorney close by.

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/14/09 09:29 AM

Just thought of something.....Maybe he could talk to the land owner on the west side of the river????? I did see a pickup, over the weekend, right close to where the boat is.......maybe a pull from that side would loosen it from the log/rootball.......then it could be pulled to the east side of the river....

Heck, they might even be able to pull it right up the bank, on the west side of the river........or enough to get water out and float it down to the launch.......just a thought...

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/14/09 03:40 PM

You do not have to pull the boat all the way to the beach. A gear driven come-along, a couple shots of haywire and a tree/log jam/big rock is all that is needed. Pull from the up stream side and take your time. If you pull too fast the boat will only be usefull to the tweakers. Getting the boat hooked up is the tough part, even if it is only 3ft deep.
I think a truck or truck winch would pull to fast and the boat would be folded up like a beach towel when finished.

I would love to help out in the recovery effort if extra guys are needed. Never seen it done before and I'll get in there to help to see it happen (and to help out).

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/14/09 11:33 PM

I'd be willing to lend a helping hand to recover the boat. Tonight's rain should stabilize the flow.
I could run my skiff up there in the morning, after work. PM for my cellular.

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/15/09 09:31 AM

Just stay to the "EAST" of the big concrete block......both drift and jet boaters.....yesterday there was about 1' to 2', of the block, showing.

They worked on trying to get the boat out, yesterday......no could do, just in a tough place to try and "get a angle" to pull from the shore. They did try from the West side of the river but the rope on the front of the drift boat broke. Land owner doesn't want any trucks in there, because it might make a mess, with the frozen ground thawing....and then the tree its "hung up on" is causing problems.

Just looked at the water flow......going up, 1100 to 1500..... just will make it tougher to work to try and get a larger rope/cable on the boat.

Re: SUNK--Driftboat, Thor-Built.....Satsop River - 12/16/09 02:14 PM

I guess the dude got his boat out yesterday. Oar locks bent, minor rash along the gunnels , but still in pretty good shape. So he lost some gear and an oar, but the boat is out, and nobody got killed, so the outcome could have been much worse.

That is good news. I know I'd be relieved if the roles were reversed.

Could have been worse by a long shot.
