Best way to wash Simms jacket? - 07/01/14 10:45 PM

I have one of the orange Simms parkas and it is time to wash it! Smells like gut rot! And stained some

Any really good tips for getting the smell /stain out and keeping it's waterproofness!

Thanks!

I've never had the stones to put mine in the washing machine.
Some do it and swear by it. I'd use a tumbler (front load) and not an agitator, tho.
Nikwax Tech Wash for the soap.

I soak mine in warm water/mild detergent, hose off and drip dry.
Sometimes I just hose it down and drip dry.

Hot dryer is best.

The outer finish likes HEAT to restore its water shedding capability.

Straight from the source...

"Hello,

You can use regular detergent or stain removers such as shout without harming the Gore-tex. Just use the washing instructions on the garment. Be sure the detergent does not contain bleach or fabric softener and you should be good. The outer coating will help shed water and can diminish with regular washing . The jacket should be washed on occasion to prevent oils from our hair and skin from affecting the Gore-tex membrane. If you find that your jacket is not shedding water as well anymore you can reapply this coating using a product called Revivex. This should not be necessary for a few years unless the jacket is washed frequently.

If you see that the water is beading fine then do not worry.

Here is a great washing tutorial that works for any Gore-tex jacket:

We have had good results with regular detergent. Woolite is gentle and is what I use.

Careful with the dryer and be sure not to overheat, I would check it frequently.

I wash mine about every 4 or 5 trips. Hang dry, always. About 8 years old and ready for a restoration of water repellant.

I was told this from a Helly Hansen rep several years ago too. Using heat in the dryer tightens up the weaves and helps with water repelling.

All my Gore-Tex style garments get washed in Nikwax Tech Wash or Nathan Penguin Sport Wash.

I'd be afraid of killin' the membrane with the dryer.
Drip dry is safer, IMO.
Then treat shell as needed.
