Budget Baitcaster Recommendations? - 12/29/14 12:21 PM

Greetings

My nephew is looking for a cheaper baitcaster that can actually cast, under $100 if possible.

Thanks and Happy New Year

Not sure what size fits your needs, but Lexa 100s are on sale for $70 right now.

I have a couple Diawa Tierras that impressed me

6.3:1 is really nice and it has a very smooth drag. I think it is nicer than a Chronarch or an Abu 5000- but to each their own. smile

Yep. Buy an older green cu-200 or 201 if the poor kid is a leftie. Then clean it up, lube it, re-drag it & give to the lad.

It's just the right thing to do.

I use an ebay bought corado-e 201. I like it a lot. There is a difference between corado e vs g series.

Example of a sold item, this one looks ready to fish, $80. The 5 to 1 is a nice reel for hardware.

This is false. Why would you want the kid to cast with one hand, then switch over to reel with the same hand? Get him set up right. 201 for righties and the 200 if he's a southpaw. Never understood why a guy would cast with dominant hand only to fish with weak side just so you can crank with stronger hand.

Hold with your weak hand and manipulate with your dominant hand.

Really?

My post my opinion.

I'd teach the kid to cast with either arm, just like I was taught. River left, river right, overhanging tree branches..... gotta be able to bring the whole bag of tricks to the show.

Even thou I'm right handed I prefer the rod in my left, especially when fighting a fish.

My Daiwa Lexa 100 is going strong at year 1.5. I paid 85$ new. I also have a Curado E7 201 and they seem about the same in terms of durability and smoothness.

I think the Lexa is a great value.

It's a brain wiring thing.
Can't be argued.

My BIL for example is very wacky....
Cranks a spinning reel lefty but has to crank a baitcaster rightie.
He is right-handed.

Just bustin' yer chops a bit.

Luckily for me, I'm a southpaw so the 200's are perfect for me.

To the OP, I agree the green Curado's would be an excellent choice.
